KALAMAZOO, MI – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team fell to Western Michigan 83-65 on Saturday afternoon at Read Fieldhouse.
Junior guard Paula Lopez led the Bulls offensively, scoring 17 points on 58% shooting. Freshman forward Meg Lucas had a stellar day, recording 14 points, going a perfect 7-of-7, from the floor to go with 10 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season and Janyah Bohanon and Amber Howard chipped in six points each, with the former also recording a new career-high with nine rebounds.
Western Michigan scored on the first possession of the game, but the Bulls would then lock down on defense as they held the Broncos scoreless for four minutes and capitalized, using a 6-0 run to take an early lead. Later, Anaya Coleman found Diann Jackson on the block for an easy layup and Bohanon knocked down a turnaround jumper in the paint to give UB a 10-8 lead at the media timeout. Buffalo continued to lock down on defense as Aniya Rowe converted a steal and score, Ella Corry knocked down a midrange jumper and Lopez buried a triple to cap a 9-0 run and give the Bulls a 17-8 lead at the end of the first.
The Broncos opened the second on a 7-0 run to cut the lead to two before Corry and Bohanon knocked down a pair of pullup jumpers to put UB ahead 23-21 midway through the quarter. Howard then gave the Bulls a spark scoring four straight points before Bohanon and Lopez scored on back-to-back possessions to spark a 10-0 run to put UB up by double digits with two minutes remaining and they would then extend the run to 14-2 and take a 35-25 lead at the half.
WMU got hot from deep to start the third quarter as they drained a trio of triples to spark a 13-2 run that put them up one and forced a UB timeout at the five-minute mark. Coleman knocked down a step-back triple to put UB back on top at the media timeout, but the Broncos answered with an 11-0 run to take a 57-47 lead at the end of the third.
Lopez knocked down a jumper on UB's first possession of the fourth quarter and Coleman drained a triple on the wing, but the hosts answered with another big run to go up by 17 at the final media timeout and the Bulls would get no closer than 13 the rest of the way.
The Bulls were even with the Broncos in the paint, scoring 38 points inside, while also maintaining a narrow 36-32 edge on the glass and scoring 18 points off WMU turnovers, but UB was plagued by turnovers of their own and the Broncos capitalized, scoring 23 points off those miscues.
Up next, Buffalo will return to the friendly confines of Alumni Arena for a two-game homestand beginning on Wednesday, January 7 when they host Northern Illinois at 6pm.
