COLUMBUS, Ohio – The University at Buffalo men's tennis team saw their 2024-25 season come to an end with a 4-0 loss to #6 Ohio State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at the Ty Tucker Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon.
The Buckeyes took the doubles point with wins at first and third doubles to go up 1-0 in the match. Seniors Daniils Snaiders and Cheng Tang were locked in a tight battle, on serve, at second doubles when play was stopped.
Junior Theodoros Mitsakos battled throughout his first set, taking OSU's Michael Kim, ranked #11 by ITA, to a tiebreak where he ultimately came up short. The hosts then secured the victory with wins at fifth, fourth and third singles, respectively.
Today's match was the final one for UB's three seniors Tang, Snaiders and Yu-Shiang Huang who end their special careers as both MAC regular season and tournament champions. Snaiders finishes his decorated UB career as the program's all-time leader in doubles wins. Tang, the 2025 MAC Tournament Most Outstanding Player, finishes his career ranked third in career doubles victories and 12th in singles wins, while Huang also finished his four-year career ranked in the top 15 in doubles victories. As a team, the Bulls finished the year with an 18-6 overall record.
"This season will go down as one of the greatest in UB men's tennis history," said head coach Lee Nickell. "I am extremely proud of Rex, Daniils and Sean for sticking through the hard times. They never gave up and produced some of the best seasons a senior has ever had. We pride ourselves on developing players, but we only succeed with 'buy in' and this year was a true collective effort from all eight guys. Tony Miller and Ethan Nittolo deserve all of the coaching credits this year. Their sacrifice and hard work are unmatched and we wouldn't be in this position without them. They are two of the best coaches in the country."
"The future is bright, and we now shift our focus on coming back next year and winning a round at the NCAA Tournament. We will have tremendous leadership with Theodoros, Faiz and Clement as seniors and our expectation is for the younger guys to keep improving. We can't wait for the fall. Go Bulls!"
