Bulls Face Off Against Bowling Green In MAC Tournament Quarterfinals

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team (24-6, 13-5 MAC) will face sixth-seeded Bowling Green in the MAC Tournament on Wednesday in the fourth quarterfinal game of the day. This is the fifth time the two programs will face off in the MAC Tournament, with the last meeting coming on March 13, 2024, when the Bulls defeated the Falcons 70-62 in the quarterfinals.
This is the first time the Bulls have entered the MAC tournament as the three seed.
The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ with Dave Bacon (play-by-play) and Jacki Windon (color) announcing and can be heard on 1520 AM and the Varsity Network with Jack Kreuzer on the call.
This is the 54th overall meeting between Buffalo and Bowling Green with the Falcons owning a slim 28-26 series advantage. The Bulls have won four straight over the Falcons, most recently a 70-60 win at the Stroh Center in the lone meeting of the year.
Buffalo finished the regular season with a 24-6 overall record and 13-5 league mark. The conference announced its postseason awards on Tuesday morning, with Chellia Watson receiving First-Team All-MAC recognition, Kirsten Lewis-Williams named Second Team All-MAC and Noelani Cornfield named to the All-Defensive Team.
The Bulls are led offensively by Watson who leads the MAC and ranks in the top 20 nationally in total points (610), points per game (20.3), field goals made (233) and attempted (521). Lewis-Williams is averaging 13.6 points per game while leading the team in rebounding (5.3 rpg) and Cornfield is also averaging in double figures at 10.6 ppg, while leading the team and ranking 18th nationally in assists per game (5.7).
As a team, the Bulls lead the league in scoring offense (74.3), scoring margin (+14.8), field goal percentage (.461), assists (16.8), and turnover margin (+7.5) while also ranking in the top three in scoring defense (59.5), field goal defense (.383), steals per game (10.5) and free throw percentage (.770).
The Bowling Green Falcons finished the regular season with an 18-12 overall and 11-7 league mark after defeating Eastern Michigan 87-67 on Saturday. The Falcons are one of the hottest teams entering the tournament as they have won eight of their last 10 games. The Falcons are balanced offensively as they have four players scoring in double figures, led by senior guard Amy Velasco who is averaging 16.1 points per game while also leading the team in assists (4.8 apg). Paige Kohler (13.6 ppg), Lexi Fleming (13.4 ppg) and Erika Porter (10.5) ppg are also averaging in double figures, with the latter leading the team in rebounding (5.3 rpg).
As a team, BG ranks in the top three in the league in field goal percentage (.451), three-point field goal percentage (.357), threes made per game (7.6) and offensive rebounds per game (11.4). The Falcons have outrebounded their opponent in 18 of 30 games, with a rebounding margin of 10 or more in nine of those contests.
The winner of Wednesday's game will face the winner of #2 Toledo and #7 Central Michigan in the second semifinal game of the day on Friday, March 14 at 12:30pm.
