CLEVELAND, Ohio – Down by as many as 13 points in the second half, the University at Buffalo women's basketball team stormed back, doubling up Bowling Green 28-14 in the fourth quarter, to defeat the Falcons 65-63 in the quarterfinals of the Mid-American Conference Tournament at Rocket Arena on Wednesday night.
Three Bulls scored in double figures, led by Chellia Watson who scored a game-high 27 points, including 13 in the final frame. Sophomore Kirsten Lewis-Williams was a force on both ends of the floor as she recorded the third double-double of her career with 15 points and 11 rebounds to go with three assists and four steals and Noelani Cornfield added 14.
After a slow start to the game for both teams, Jordyn Beaty got UB going with a mid-range jumper and then came up with a big block and hit Watson for a fastbreak bucket as the game was tied at six at the first media timeout. Lewis-Williams sliced to the basket for two, Watson drained a corner three and Cornfield got to the rack for a layup of her own to put UB up 13-10 at the end of the first.
Bowling Green opened the second quarter on a 7-0 run to take the lead before Lewis-Williams drove and got a floater off glass to drop to end the UB scoring drought, but the Falcons maintained a 19-15 lead at the media timeout. Cornfield then got into attack mode as she knocked down a pair of midrange jumpers to pull UB within four at the half.
Watson and Cornfield knocked down jumpers in the paint on UB's first two possessions of the third quarter before Lewis-Williams skied up for an offensive rebound and kicked to Watson for a triple to put UB back on top 29-28, but the Falcons answered with a pair of triples to take a 39-32 lead at the media timeout. They would extend their run to 13-2 before Watson drove and finished off glass for a pair of layups to pull UB within seven at the two-minute mark, but the Falcons answered with a 6-0 run and they would lead 49-37 after three.
The Bulls scored on two straight possessions to open the fourth quarter and then Watson heated up from deep as she drilled two straight triples to pull UB within five at the media timeout. Watson stayed in attack mode as she got a floater in the lane to drop plus the foul before the Bulls tied the game at 57 at the charity stripe. Later, Alexis Davis powered up through traffic for a tough layup to even the game at 59. Later, with the game tied at 63, Watson drove baseline and finished with a reverse layup off glass and then the Bulls came up with a huge defensive stop to seal the victory.
Buffalo scored 28 points in the paint, while forcing 14 Bowling Green turnovers, scoring 10 points off those miscues, and added 10 fastbreak points.
Up next, Buffalo will face Toledo in the second semifinal game on Friday, March 14 at approximately 12:30pm.
