BINGHAMTON, NY – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team fell 71-58 at Binghamton on Saturday afternoon.
The Bulls were powered by a trio of freshmen as Aniya Rowe led the Bulls in scoring for the second straight game with 17 points, Meg Lucas recorded her third double-double of the season with 14 points and 15 rebounds and Ella Corry scored in double figures for the first time with a career-high 14 points on an efficient six-of-nine shooting from the floor.
Binghamton opened the game on a 6-0 run before Deana Thompson sliced to the basket for a tough layup through contact and Rowe knocked down a midrange jumper. Later, Paula Lopez drilled a triple on the wing, but the hosts answered with a 9-2 run to go up by nine and they would lead 22-13 at the end of the first.
Lucas gave the Bulls to start the second quarter as she went on a 5-0 run, sparked by a great catch and finish for an and-one bucket, to cut the lead to four, but the Bearcats answered with a pair of midrange jumpers and maintained a 28-20 lead at the media timeout. After the break, Rowe hit Lucas for a layup on the block and then Rowe drilled a deep triple on the wing to pull UB within three. Binghamton scored on two straight possessions to go up by eight, but the Bulls closed the half on an 8-2 run, capped by a pair of steal and scores from Corry and Lucas, to cut the lead to two at the half.
The teams traded free throw attempts to start the third quarter before Corry hit Liza Field for a baseline jumper to trim the lead to four at the media timeout. The Bulls went into attack mode out of the break as Corry grabbed a rebound and raced up court for a fastbreak bucket plus the foul to tie the game before Lucas drove and kicked to Rowe for a triple to give UB its first lead of the game, 48-45, but the Bearcats closed the quarter on an 11-0 run to take a 56-48 lead at the end of the third.
Corry got into double figures with a driving layup in the paint early in the fourth quarter, but the Bulls got sloppy with the ball and the hosts capitalized to go back up by 11 at the six-minute mark and they would maintain a double-digit lead at the final media timeout. Buffalo got to the charity stripe in the final minutes but it wasn't enough as the rally came up short.
Buffalo controlled the boards once again, outrebounding Binghamton by eight, including 18 offensive rebounds. The Bulls scored 24 of their points in the paint but the Bearcats edged UB in the turnover battle and capitalized, scoring 17 points off UB miscues.
Up next, Buffalo will have a 10-day break before traveling to the Lonestar State for a pair of games at the ACU Christmas Classic, hosted by Abilene Christian, December 19-20.
