BUFFALO, N.Y. – A late push by the University at Buffalo men's basketball team (5-9, 0-2 MAC) wasn't enough to take down the MAC preseason favorite Ohio Bobcats (8-6, 2-0 MAC) on Tuesday evening at Alumni Arena. The visiting Bobcats pulled away with an 88-79 win.
The Bulls reached their largest lead of the game with a 12-5 lead at the 11:18 mark of the first half courtesy of stellar defense. Buffalo defense held the Bobcats to just 2-for-13 (15.4%) from the floor in the opening stretch with 3 turnovers. Buffalo held the lead for just under an additional 3 minutes as Ohio started knocking down their shots. The rest of the half, the Bobcats were 11-for-15 (73.3%) from the floor. Buffalo's offense cooled down as they shot 29.4% from the floor in the half, including missing all 12 three-point attempts. At the half, Ohio led, 37-20.
The Bobcats' offense came out of the half hot as they padded their lead. Their largest lead reached 23 points with 13:31 to go in regulation. After taking a 58-35 lead, the Bulls would then outscore the Bobcats, 44-30 the rest of the way as the offense shot 55.9% from the floor including going 7-for-15 from deep. The Bulls made it interesting as they cut the lead down to 14 with just under 2 minutes remaining. Buffalo managed to make it a 9-point ballgame with just seconds remaining as they had their best scoring run on the night at 8-0. Ohio managed to secure their final possession to run out the clock.
For the third time this season, Tyson Dunn led the Bulls in points (21), rebounds (5) and assists (8). He previously did so against Old Dominion (Nov. 4th – 24 points, 6 rebounds, 10 assists) and Morgan State (Nov. 22nd - 22 points, 6 rebounds, 8 assists). He added 4 steals on the night on the defensive end. This was the second time this year he led the team in points, rebounds, assists and steals. Dunn also knocked down a career-high 5 three-pointers.
Ryan Sabol and Ben Michaels each had 15 points as Anquan Boldin Jr. rounded out the Bulls' top scorers with 12 points. Noah Batchelor and Bryson Wilson grabbed 5 boards apiece. Kavon Bradford and Sabol each finished with 4 assists.
