Bulls Travel South for Matchups Against North Texas and Florida

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo women's volleyball team (4-7, 0-0 MAC) will travel to Gainesville, Fla. to face the North Texas Mean Green (2-7, 0-0 AAC) and the No. 16 Florida Gators (7-2, 0-0 SEC) for the Sunshine Invitational hosted by Florida. The Bulls will open their play against North Texas on Saturday at 5 p.m. and will battle Florida on Sunday at 3 p.m. Sunday's match will be featured on the SEC Network.
Buffalo has never faced North Texas or Florida in program history. The Mean Green enter the match with a 2-7 record and wins over Hampton and Texas Southern. The Gators are ranked 16th in the recent American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) poll. In their last match on Tuesday, they defeated No. 18 Florida State, 3-2. Their match against the Gators will mark their third match against a nationally ranked team this season, the most in program history. The Bulls' lone win against an SEC opponent came last season on Sept. 8 when the Bulls swept the Missouri Tigers at the Xavier Invitational.
The Bulls are coming off a 3-1 win over crosstown rival Niagara on Wednesday evening. In the win, sophomore outside hitter Manoela Forlin set two four-set program records. She finished with 27 kills that tied Candie Hirst's 27-kill performance on Oct. 13, 1995, against Pennsylvania. She broke Lindsay Matikosh's 27.5-points record against Siena on Aug. 28, 2003, with 31.5 points.
Maria Futey's 20-dig performance moved her to sixth all-time with 1,337 career digs. She passed Laurie Santelli (1991-95, 1,317) and is 40 back from Candie Hirst (1992-95, 1,377). Futey was on fire from the service line against the Purple Eagles. She boosted the Bulls to a 10-0 run with five service aces. She went on to finish with a career-high seven aces in the match. The team finished with 13 aces on the night to move them to 21st in the NCAA with 74 aces on the season.
Mandy Leigh is just 13 assists shy from reaching second all-time in program career assists. She currently has 3,877 and will pass Scout McLerran (2016-19, 3,887) and Lindsey Schlegel (2007-11, 3,889). The program record is held by Amy Brown (2002-05) with 4,349 career assists.
Abby Leigh continued to climb the national rankings with a .414 attack percentage. With the top-mark in the MAC, she hit .571 against Niagara on Wednesday with 16 kills on 29 attempts with just one error.
Following the weekend, the Bulls will turn to MAC play as they'll open on the road at Western Michigan (4-5, 0-0 MAC), the reigning MAC Champions. The Broncos are the MAC Preseason favorite to win the MAC title as they received 11 first place votes and nine tournament title votes.
