EUGENE, Oreg – Assistant Coach and UB Track & Field alumni Christina Wende competed in the United States Olympic Trials on Friday and Saturday in the triple jump, looking to punch her ticket to Paris as a member of the Olympic team. Wende ultimately finished 12th in the finals round of the event on Saturday, failing to render a final mark in the triple jump with multiple fouls.
Wende had a strong performance on Friday night, finishing her third attempt with a mark of 13.10 meters. Her performance just edged out 13th place finisher Arianna Fisher, sending Wende to the event finals.
"Only a handful of individuals can say they have competed at the USA Olympic Trials. Coach Wende has put herself in that elite group," said Head Coach Vicki Mitchell. "Participating at the trials has been an excellent opportunity to compete against the highest level of athletes. This experience will not only help her continue to grow as a competitive athlete, but also as a coach."
All results from the Olympic Trials can be accessed here.
Participating in the Olympic Trials adds to Wende's long list of accomplishments during her time at UB. In her final season as a student-athlete, Wende broke the outdoor school record in the triple jump with a mark of 12.85 meters and earned three medals at MAC Championships, including taking gold at both indoor and outdoor conference championships in the long jump.
The now Assistant Coach joined the UB Track & Field coaching staff this past fall, specializing in horizontal jumps, while also being a full-time student in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at UB.
"As a coach, she has continued to lead by example to the student-athletes on our team with her level of commitment and ability to juggle multiple roles." said Mitchell.
