Lucyshyn Eclipses 500 Career Strikeouts as Bulls Split Doubleheader at Canisius

BUFFALO, N.Y. β The University at Buffalo softball team (16-29, 7-15 MAC) split their doubleheader at crosstown rival Canisius (20-20, 14-9 MAAC) on Wednesday evening.

The highlight of the day was Alexis Lucyshyn reaching 500 career strikeouts in her storied career. She finished game one with 12 strikeouts, her fourth double digit strikeout performance of the season.

After two scoreless innings, the Bulls scored five runs in the top of the third inning. Lucyshyn started the scoring off with an RBI single up the middle to score Alyssa Wasielewski. With Lucyshyn and Fernimen on the corners, both runners advanced on a wild pitch as the Bulls took a 2-0 lead. With the bases loaded, Sara Kelly forced a walk to force a run in. Up 3-0, Julia Tarantino then forced a bases loaded walk to make it 4-0. It was wash, rinse, repeat as then Lyla Ambrose walked with the bases loaded to make it a 5-0 game.

In the fourth inning, Lucyshyn hit a two-run blast to center field in the fourth inning to extend their lead to 7-0.

The Golden Griffins got on the board in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run homer. The Bulls still led, 7-2.

Kelly got the runs back as she hit a two-RBI double down the left field line to score Abbey Nagel and Hannah McGonigle. Up 9-2 after six innings, Wasielewski hit her first home run of the season to give Buffalo a 10-2 lead. The Bulls would win game one, 10-2.

Game two was a low scoring affair. The Bulls and Golden Griffins were scoreless in the first two innings of play. Canisius got on the board in the third inning with a solo home run. The Golden Griffins scored an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single up the middle. Buffalo's offense went down in order in the top of the seventh as Canisius took home the 2-0 victory.

The Bulls will close out the 2024 season at Toledo for a three-game series starting on Saturday.
