Seniors Lucyshyn and Tarantino Go the Distance in the Circle, Bulls Fall to the Bobcats

BUFFALO, N.Y. β On the day the University at Buffalo softball team (15-27, 7-14 MAC) celebrated their six seniors, the Ohio Bobcats (25-22, 13-8 MAC) played spoiler. Ohio won both games on Friday afternoon, winning 3-1 and 4-1.

It was a pitching duel as Alexis Lucyshyn and the Bobcats combined for 15 strikeouts, eight of which came in the first three innings. The first hit of the game went to the Bobcats in the fourth inning with a single to right center. Ohio took a 1-0 lead as they had four hits in the inning.

The game stayed at 1-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning. With Lucyshyn leading off the inning, she cranked a solo home run to left field to tie the game at 1. Mia Mitchell reached base on an error to extend the inning. With a Julia Tarantino walk, there were runners on first and second with two outs and Lily Lauck up to bat. Looking for the walk-off win, she ripped a ball to center, but it was caught to end the inning.

In the top of the eighth, the inning started off with a ground out to short. Three straight singles gave Ohio a 2-1 lead. With runners on the corners, they used a double steal to steal a run to extend their lead to 3-1.

In the bottom of the eighth, Tianna Williams reached base on a hit by pitch with two outs. Mitchell hit a deep fly ball to center that was caught to end the game.

In eight innings pitched, Lucyshyn finished with nine strikeouts, three earned runs on eight hits and one walk. At the plate she went 3-for-4 with a solo home run and two singles.

In game two of the doubleheader, the game was scoreless after two innings of play. The Bobcats struck first in the third inning with the bases loaded. A ball hit to right field, was dropped in the corner that cleared the bases to give Ohio a 3-0 lead. They added to their lead in the fourth inning with an RBI single up the middle scoring the runner from second.

With bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth inning, Buffalo got on the board with a fielder's choice from Abbey Nagel. Madison Fernimen scored to make it a 4-1 Bobcat lead.

The score remained 4-1 the rest of the way as Ohio took home the win.

Tomorrow's game against Ohio is scheduled to start at 1 p.m., but due to incoming weather, it may be moved to an earlier time.
