Bulls Offense Explodes for 9-3 Victory Over Northern Illinois

DEKALB, Ill. β A Mia Mitchell go ahead three-run home run in the fifth inning lifted the Bulls (15-25, 7-12 MAC) to a 9-3 victory over the Northern Illinois (13-29, 6-14 MAC) on Sunday afternoon. Julia Tarantino went the distance in the circle for the Bulls in back-to-back games against the Huskies.

Buffalo's bats stayed hot from yesterday as they took the early 2-0 lead in the first inning. With Madison Fernimen on first and two outs, Mitchell struck out, but reached first base as the catcher mishandled the dropped third strike. The Bulls then executed the double steal to move the runners to second and third. The aggressive steal paid off as Abbey Nagel ripped a two-RBI single up the middle.

The Huskies answered with a pair of their own runs in the bottom of the first with a two-run home run to tie the game, 2-2.

The score remained 2-2 until the bottom of the fourth when Northern Illinois took a 3-2 lead after stealing home. The lead didn't last long as Mitchell hit the go ahead three-run home run in the top of the fifth inning to give Buffalo the 5-3 lead.

Buffalo added four insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning. Mitchell kept the bat going as she ripped an RBI single to score Hannah McGonigle and extend the lead to 6-3. Sara Kelly hit a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Lucyshyn making it a 7-3 ballgame. Taranitno helped her cause with a two-RBI double over her own to score Nagel and Mitchell to ice the game at 9-3.

After a leadoff bunt single, the on-deck batter grounded out to Tarantino which advanced the runner to second. The runner was caught stealing third by Lyla Ambrose to put the Bulls one out away from victory. Tarantino closed the game with a strikeout.

Tarantino finished the game with three runs allowed on seven hits whole striking out five Huskies. Tianna Williams, Lucyshyn, Mitchell, Nagel and Tarantino each had two hits. Mitchell led the way with four RBIs as Nagel and Tarantino finished with two apiece.

The Bulls are back in action on Friday and Saturday as they host the Ohio Bobcats (23-21, 11-8 MAC) for Senior Weekend.
