
Bulls Split Road Doubleheader at Northern Illinois

DEKALB, Ill. – The University at Buffalo softball team (14-25, 6-12 MAC) split their Saturday doubleheader at Northern Illinois (13-28, 6-13 MAC), taking game two, 4-1.
The Huskies didn't waste time in the first game as an RBI double gave them the early 1-0 lead in the first inning. The double was followed up with a two-run home run to left to make it a 3-0 lead. The Bulls' offense struggled to find the scoreboard until the third inning. Alexis Lucyshyn knocked in a pair of runs with a ball hit to left field. Tianna Williams and Madison Fernimen came around to score making it a 3-2 Northern Illinois lead.
The Huskies' offense clicked in the bottom of the third as four three runs scored with timely hitting. Northern Illinois led, 7-2.
Lily Lauck scored Buffalo's third run of the game with Fernimen at the plate hitting a ball to third base. The Bulls still trailed, 7-3.
Northern Illinois scored a pair of runs in the fourth inning to extend their lead to 9-3. The offense continued to score in the fifth and sixth as they won, 11-3, after six innings.
In game two, the Bulls were able to total 13 hits, the third most in a game this season. Williams an Wasielewski led the Bulls with three hits apiece.
The Bulls and Huskies were scoreless after two innings, but it was Buffalo breaking the scoreless affair in the third inning. Alyssa Wasielewski led the inning off with a double to left center followed by Fernimen bunting for a single. Williams hit a double of her own to score Wasielewski. The Bulls loaded the bases after a Lucyshyn walk with no outs. Fernimen scored on a sacrifice fly courtesy of Mia Mitchell. The Huskies were able to get out of the jam by allowing just two runs on four hits.
Buffalo added a run in both the fourth and fifth innings with Williams hitting an RBI single and Fernimen walking in a run.
Northern Illinois scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single up the middle.
Julia Tarantino picked up the win with five hits allowed and three strikeouts.
The Bulls and Huskies will wrap up the three-game series tomorrow at 1 p.m. ET.
