Bulls Mercy Winthrop in 8-0 Decision on Saturday

STATESBORO, Ga. β The University at Buffalo softball team (8-10, 0-0 MAC) defeated the Winthrop Eagles in shutout fashion on Saturday evening, 8-0.

Sophomore pitcher Emily Watters went the distance for the Bulls as she struck out six Eagles while allowing just four hits. This marked her third career complete game shutout as she had two late in the season last year.

In the bottom of the second inning, Tianna Williams doubled to right field to get the Bulls started. Lyla Ambrose reached base after a hit by pitch to put runners on first and second. With Sara Kelly at the plate, the runners advanced on a wild pitch. Kelly then hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Williams to put the Bulls on top, 1-0.

Buffalo padded their lead in the third inning courtesy off an Alexis Lucyshyn three-run home run. Up 4-0 with no outs in the third, Winthrop made a pitching change. After the change, Mia Mitchell was hit by a pitch and then stole second base. Lily Lauck then singled up the middle to as Mitchell came around to score to go up 5-0.

In the fourth inning, Alyssa Wasielewski and Abbey Nagel were on base with one out as Lucyshyn stepped up to the plate. Lucyshyn ripped a base clearing double to right center to give the Bulls a 7-0 lead.

The Bulls were able to slam the door in the bottom of the sixth as Marissa Calloway hit a sacrifice fly to center as Mitchell scored.

The Bulls are back in action tomorrow against Georgia Southern at 9 a.m. The game can be watched on ESPN+.
