BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo softball team (11-18, 3-5 MAC) lost their series to the Miami (OH) RedHawks (26-6, 9-0 MAC) on Saturday afternoon. In game one, the RedHawks won, 8-5. They followed that performance up by a 12-0 win in five innings.
In game one against the RedHawks, the Bulls battled for all seven innings. Lily Lauck went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored as both Alexis Lucyshyn and Mia Mitchell each had two RBIs.
After a scoreless first inning, the RedHawks took a 2-0 lead in the second off a two-run home run to center. The Bulls answered back with a run of their own in the bottom of the second. Alyssa Wasielewski drove in Lauck off a double to the left field wall.
In the third inning, Miami extended their lead to 5-1. They scored two runs off a single to center field and a ball that stayed in the infield. The Bulls tied the game in the fourth inning after a pitching change. With Madison Fernimen and Lauck on second and third, respectively, a Lucyshyn single to center scored two runs to make it a 5-3 Miami lead. Mitchell tied the game with a two-run blast to left center.
The Bulls had the opportunity to take the lead in the fifth inning. After Sara Kelly and Lyla Ambrose were walked, they advanced on a ground out by Lauck. Wasielewski drove a fly ball to right field that was caught, Kelly tagged and was thrown out at home on a bang-bang play.
Neither team scored in the sixth, but the RedHawks put up three runs in the seventh inning. The Bulls couldn't respond as Miami took game one.
Game two did not go Buffalo's way. The RedHawks won 12-0 in a five-inning mercy. Entering the series, Miami was one of the best hitting teams in the country with 83 home runs and a .357 batting average. They added four home runs to their total in the second game.
After pitching 2.0+ innings for the Bulls, Emily Watters struggled in the circle. Lucyshyn came in and shut down the RedHawks' offense as she didn't allow a run in three innings. Abbey Nagel and Lucyshyn were the only Bulls to get a hit in the game.
