Bulls Beat Prairie View A&M and Fall to Incarnate Word in Extras

SAN ANTONIO β The University at Buffalo softball team (2-2, 0-0 MAC) split their double header at the Cardinal Classic on Saturday. In the first game of the day, Buffalo defeated the Prairie View A&M Panthers, 8-7. In their second game, the Bulls fell to the Incarnate Word Cardinals, 9-8 in extra innings.

GAME 1 VS. PRAIRIE VIEW A&M
Just like yesterday against the Prairie View A&M Panthers, the Bulls jumped out to a lead in the first inning. Madison Fernimen led the Bulls off with a walk and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. After an Abbey Nagel ground out to second, Fernimen moved to third base. Alexis Lucyshyn drove in Fernimen on a fielder's choice to give Buffalo a 1-0 lead. Mia Mitchell reached base to give the Bulls two runners on with Julia Tarantino up to bat. Tarantino ripped a drive to right field, driving in both Lucyshyn and Mitchell. Bulls led 3-0 after the top of the first.

In the bottom half, the Panthers put up two runs of their own after a bases loaded situation with two outs. The Bulls got out of it still leading 3-2 after a popout to first base.

The action quieted down until the third inning when the Bulls padded their lead. Sara Kelly drove Nagel in from third base and moved Lucyshyn over to third. With two Bulls in scoring position, Tarantino knocked in a pair of runs to extend Buffalo's lead to 6-2.

The Panthers answered right back in the third inning. A two-run double cut into Buffalo's lead, 6-4. After a single to left, there were two runners on with two outs. Buffalo couldn't get out of the jam as the Panthers then his a three-run home run to take a 7-6 lead.

Lucyshyn entered the circle in relief in the fourth inning and struck out five batters in four innings.

Buffalo completed the comeback in the sixth inning. Tianna Williams led the inning off with a walk, followed by an Alyssa Wasielewski bunt for a single. Hannah McGonigle pinch ran for Williams to add speed on the base paths. Fernimen's bat stayed hot as she doubled to center batting in McGonigle and moving Wasielewski to third. With the game tied at seven, Lucyshyn hit a sacrifice fly to right field allowing Wasielewski to score and give the Bulls an 8-7 lead.

The Panthers were shut down the rest of the way as Buffalo snuck out with an 8-7 win.

GAME 2 VS. INCARNATE WORD
Game two of the day was a thriller. Buffalo took a 2-0 lead in the first inning off a pair of doubles from Mitchell and Tarantino. The Cardinals struck back in the bottom of the inning to make it a 2-1 ballgame. Buffalo's lead didn't last as Incarnate Word scored five runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 5-2 lead.

The Cardinals' scoring continued in the fourth and fifth innings as they extended their lead to 7-2.

With the bases loaded in the sixth, Williams singled allowing Mitchell to score. Incarnate Word led, 7-3. Avelyn Van Heyst made it a game as she doubled to left scoring Williams and Kelly cutting the lead down to 7-5. With their last ups in the seventh, Emily Watters hit a two-run home run to tie the game at 7. The Cardinals would go down in order in the bottom of the seventh to go into extras.

The Bulls took an 8-7 lead in the eighth inning after a sacrifice fly to centerfield. Lucyshyn scoring put the Bulls in front. Unfortunately, the Cardinals tied the game at 8 after a single. With a runner on first, the Cardinals bunted the runner over to second. The very next batter singled and the Cardinals walked it off on the Bulls. Incarnate Word won, 9-8.

The Bulls are back in action tomorrow against the Lindenwood Lions at 11 a.m. ET.
