Women’s Soccer Places Program Record 13 Student-Athletes on Academic All-MAC Team

BUFFALO, NY – After a stellar season on the pitch, in which they advanced to the MAC Tournament Championship game, the University at Buffalo women's soccer team had another stellar campaign in the classroom as well, as they saw a program-record 13 student-athletes earn a spot on the Academic All-MAC Team, as announced by the conference on Thursday.
A total of 140 student-athletes across the league were named to this year's squad.
Joining the squad for UB were fifth year Olivia Bizzoni, seniors Moa Andersson, Jasmine Guerber, Ashleigh Fortunate, Kaylin Ricci, Kaya Schultz and Arianna Zumpano, juniors Ashley Reyes, Ellie Simmons and Sarah Woods and sophomores Eva Blatz, Maya Galko and Laiken Kiser.
An Econometrics & Quantitative Economics major with a 3.909 GPA, Bizzoni earns Academic All-MAC honors for the fourth time after also receiving Academic All-District Honors for the second straight year. Bizzoni made an impact at any position she played over her decorated five-year career. She had a solid senior season in which she recorded two goals and an assist on 23 shots.
Schultz, a public health major with a 3.908 GPA, earns Academic All-MAC honors for the third time in her career after also earning Academic All-District honors for the second straight year and receiving All-MAC Second Team honors for the first time in her decorated UB career, in which she appeared in 71 games and earning 57 starts across four seasons. The West Orange, NJ native started 17 games for the Bulls this season, recording a goal and four assists while also serving as the anchor for a dangerous midfield attack.
A business administration major with a 3.97 GPA, Andersson earns Academic All-MAC honors for the first time in her UB career after also being named to the Academic All-District team. She was a key reserve for the Bulls this season, helping to lead a UB midfield to great success.
Ricci, a health and human services major with a 3.682 GPA, earns Academic All-MAC honors for the third time after also earning Academic All-District recognition. She served as an anchor of a UB midfield which helped the Bulls lead the league and rank in the top 25 nationally in goals against average (.70) save percentage (.848) and shutout percentage (.550).
Zumpano, a mathematics major with a 3.561 GPA, earns Academic All-MAC honors for the fourth time after also receiving Academic All-District Honors for the second straight year. She put together a solid senior campaign in which she finished second on the team with four goals, all in league play, and total shots (32).
A health and human services major with a 4.0 GPA, Woods earns Academic All-MAC honors for the second time in her career after also being named to the Academic All-District team for the second straight year. She had a breakthrough junior season in which she recorded career-highs in goals (2), assists (4), points (8) and total shots (27).
Guerber, a criminology major with a 3.552 GPA, earns Academic All-MAC honors for the first time in her UB career after a solid senior season in which she led the Bulls in goals (6), points (13) and shots (55).
A criminology major with a 3.841 GPA, Fortunate earns Academic All-MAC honors for the second time. She was a key reserve for the Bulls this season, helping to lead a UB midfield and attack to great success.
Simmons, an exercise science major with a 3.542 GPA, earns Academic All-MAC honors for the second time after also earning All-MAC Second Team honors. The Arlington, VA native has started all 18 games for the Bulls this season and has been an impact on both ends of the field, including on set pieces, scoring two goals and adding an assist. She part of a standout backline that led the league and ranks in the top 15 nationally in goals against average (.44) save percentage (.895) and shutout percentage (.611).
An exercise science major with a 3.333 GPA, earns Academic All-MAC honors for the first time in her career after appearing in 13 matches, scoring a goal on the year, and providing a spark to the UB midfield and attack.
Galko, a communication major with a 3.96 GPA, earns Academic All-MAC honors for the first time as she continued to impress as a sophomore, recording a career-high two goals, including the game-winner, and three assists while serving as an anchor for a UB backline that led the league and rank in the top 25 nationally in goals against average (.70) save percentage (.848) and shutout percentage (.550).
An exercise science major with a 3.212 GPA, Kiser also earns Academic All-MAC honors for the first time in her career. She was a key reserve for the Bulls this season, providing a spark to the UB attack.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that sport. First-year students and any transfer in their first year of residence are not eligible.
