Bulls Set to Play Temple on National Television Sunday Afternoon

PHILADELPHIA – The University at Buffalo men's basketball team (5-6, 0-0 MAC) will travel to Philadelphia to square off against the Temple Owls (7-5, 0-0 AAC) on Sunday afternoon following a 10-day break for the holidays. The action can be seen on ESPNU with Josh Whetzel on the radio call on the Varsity Network or on the radio on Buffalo 1520/Rochester 1280.
Sunday's game will conclude the main portion of the Bulls' non-conference schedule as they'll host a Sun Belt program on Saturday, Feb. 8 as part of the MAC-Sun Belt Challenge.
LAST TIME OUT
In their last game on Dec. 19, the Bulls fell to the Georgia Bulldogs. All 13 Bulls who entered the game scored as Tyson Dunn led the team with 9 points. Tim Oboh and Frederiks Meinarts led the team with 4 rebounds each. Sophomore Ryan Sabol knocked down his 100th career three-pointer in the second half. He's now the fastest player in program history to reach this milestone as he did so in 42 games. He broke Zach Filzen's (2009-12) record of 45 games.
ABOUT THE SERIES
This will be the eighth all-time meeting between the Bulls and Owls. The series dates back to Dec. 23, 1949, when the UB hosted Temple. Temple leads the series, 5-2. The last time the programs played was on Nov. 28, 2012, where the Owls came out victorious, 54-38.
In their program history, Buffalo is 6-19 all-time against teams from the American Athletic Conference. The last time they played a team from the AAC was on Dec. 10, 2022, against the Tulane Green Wave. The game was held at State Farm Arena in Atlanta as part of the Holiday Hoopsgiving.
THE BULL-ETIN BOARD
The Bulls are 10-11 (.476) in games played on Dec. 29th in the program's history. Buffalo's last game on this date came against the Niagara Purple Eagles last season. Niagara won, 69-63. Buffalo's last win was against Canisius in 2018 on the road, 87-72.
Head Coach George Halcovage III and Assistant Coaches Tim Saunders and Kevin Voigt return to Philadelphia for the first time since their tenure at Villanova. Halcovage was with the Wildcats from 2008-23. During his time at Villanova, the Wildcats went 9-4 against the Owls.
A Buffalo win would give the Bulls a 6-6 record on the season. This would be their best win total headed into conference play since 2021-22 when the Bulls also had 6 wins prior to MAC play.
Buffalo is 3-12 (.200) all-time in the city of Philadelphia. The last appearance the Bulls made in the City of Brotherly Love was on Nov. 18, 2015, when the Saint Joseph's Hawks won, 89-67.
The Bulls will be on the road for four straight road games starting Dec. 7 at St. Bonaventure. The last time the Bulls were on the road for four straight games was from Dec. 18, 2018, to Jan. 4, 2019. UB will go 35 days between home games from Dec. 3 - Jan. 7, tied for the fifth longest streak with Siena and Kennesaw State. The only schools with a longer streak are Navy (38), Mississippi Valley State (40), Prairie View A&M (61) and Bethune Cookman (63).
In Monday afternoon's AP Poll, the Bulls had three opponents receive points with Georgia leading the way with 45. St. Bonaventure received 4 points as Penn State received 3.
The Bulls are the only Mid-American Conference team this season to play three Power Four programs: Notre Dame, Penn State, Georgia. Kent State, Central Michigan and Toledo have played two Power Four programs this year.
Buffalo has made a three in 318 straight games. They have made at least 5 three-pointers in 10 of their 11 games this season.
This season, Sabol has made at least 3 three-pointers in 10 of the 11 games. He has made a three in 17 straight games dating back to last season. The last time he failed to make a three was against Akron on Feb. 17, 2024, when he went 0-for-5.
Sabol has made a conference-high 38 three-pointers on the season that ranks him 37th in the country. His 3.45 three-pointers per game is 16th in the nation and first in the MAC. He is shooting 46.3% from deep on the season, good for 23rd in college basketball and second in the MAC behind Juanse Gorosito's 50.0% for Ball State.
Sabol has scored a team-high 186 points on the season, good for one of the best scorers in the conference. His 16.9 points per game is second in the MAC and is 116th in the country. Bowling Green's Marcus Johnson leads the MAC with 17.3 points per game.
Dunn's 63 total assists is 48th in the country and second in the MAC. His 5.6 assists per game is 34th in all of college basketball.
