BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team put on a show for the fans in attendance at Alumni Arena as they dominated on both ends of the floor and rolled to a record-breaking 123-44 win over Buffalo State on Friday evening.
Buffalo set numerous single-game records including most points scored (123), largest margin of victory (79), field goals made (48), field goal percentage (.706) and assists (29).
All 12 players that saw the floor scored on the night, led by Chellia Watson with a game-high 26 points. Sophomore Kirsten Lewis-Williams and senior Terah Harness scored 16 each while sophomores Alexis Davis and Paula Lopez added 12 apiece and fifth year guard Noelani Cornfield recorded a career-high 10 assists.
It was a slow start to the game for the Bulls before they got going in transition as Cornfield got a runner in the lane to drop and Harness drilled a triple to spark a 6-0 run and give the Bulls a 17-8 lead at the media timeout. The Bulls continued to click on offense as they extended the run to 18-4 on a mid-range jumper by Ariana Seawell and a second-chance three from Watson to go up 22-9 and force a Bengals timeout with four minutes remaining. Harness continued to heat up as she drilled her second three of the quarter and Cornfield came up with a steal and hit Lewis-Williams for the fastbreak layup and the Bulls would lead 31-12 at the end of the first.
Buffalo continued to push the pace as Watson scored on two straight possessions before Cornfield hit Lewis-Williams on the block for a layup and Mallory Daly drained a corner three to put UB up 40-14 and force a Buffalo State timeout at the 7:24 mark. The UB defense fed the offense in the middle of the quarter as Lopez came up with steals on back-to-back possessions in which she and Harness cashed in on the other end. Senior Jordyn Beaty worked the baseline and finished with a beautiful reverse layup and then Davis hit her classmate, Lewis-Williams, for a layup in the final seconds to put UB up 61-15 at the half. The Bulls held the Bengals scoreless for the final five minutes of the quarter and shot a blistering 69% from the field and 63% from beyond the arc in the first half.
Watson hit a three on UB's second possession of the third quarter and later, the Bulls scored on three straight possessions to go up 72-21. Watson continued to roll as she went on an 8-0 run by herself, scoring on four straight possessions, to give the Bulls an 82-23 lead at the media timeout. Cornfield dished out her career-high 10th assist of the game to Seawell for a layup and then Davis hit the first three-pointer of her career in the corner to put UB up by 70.
It was more of the same for the Bulls in the fourth, as they started the quarter on an 8-2 run to push them over the century mark and they would cruise to victory from there with multiple Buffalo players recording the first points of their UB careers in the final minutes, including Makenna Shaffer and Jaylin Hartman.
The Bulls dominated in every statistical category as they scored 68 points in the paint, while scoring 61 points off 39 Buffalo State miscues and adding 37 fastbreak points and 28 second chance points. UB shot 70% from the field and 50% from deep on the night.
Up next, Buffalo will travel to Princess Anne, Maryland for their first road contest of the season at Maryland Eastern Shore on Wednesday, November 13 at 7pm.
