PRINCESS ANNE, MD – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team (3-0) battled to earn their first road win of the season, a 56-46 victory at Maryland Eastern Shore, in a scrappy contest at the Hytche Center on Wednesday night.
The Bulls were led offensively by fifth year guard Chellia Watson who scored a game-high 20 points. Sophomore Kirsten Lewis-Williams also scored in double figures with 12 points.
Buffalo started the game on an 8-0 run, capped by a corner triple from Lewis-Williams and a transition stop-and-pop jumper by Watson, to force an early UMES timeout. The Bulls extended the run to 14-4 on a Lewis-Williams layup and a steal and score from Lani Cornfield to Alexis Davis. The Hawks cut the lead to seven before Paula Lopez hit Ariana Seawell for a beautiful high-low bucket and they would lead 18-9 at the end of the first.
The Bulls would continue to execute as Cornfield beat her defender with a crafty move and hit Davis on the block for a layup on UB's first possession of the second quarter. After a prolonged scoring drought for both teams, the Bulls came up with a steal and Watson finished the fastbreak layup to put the Bulls up 22-13 with five minutes remaining. Later, Terah Harness spotted up at the top of the key and drilled a triple and Buffalo would take a 27-16 lead at the half.
Buffalo continued to stay aggressive on both ends of the floor in the third quarter as Watson opened the quarter with a steal and score before Cornfield blew by her defender for a layup off glass. Later, Watson executed a high-low with Jordyn Beaty for a bucket and Lopez hit Watson for a transition layup to put UB up by 20 with just under two minutes to go.
The Hawks scored on back-to-back possessions to start the fourth quarter before Watson skied up for an offensive rebound putback to stop the run. Later, it was Cornfield attacking the glass as she converted an offensive rebound putback and then Watson got a layup plus the foul to put UB up 49-31 at the final media timeout. The Hawks responded with an 7-0 run to cut the UB lead to seven before Lewis-Williams beat her defender and finished off glass through contact for a layup. Later, Buffalo used textbook execution on an out-of-bounds set to give themselves a 53-38 lead and that would be enough as UB withstood a late UMES run to secure the victory.
Up next, Buffalo returns home to welcome Cedarville to Alumni Arena on Monday, November 18.
