Bulls Welcome Buffalo State to Alumni Arena on Friday
11/7/2024 2:53:00 PM | Women's Basketball
BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team (1-0) welcomes the Buffalo State Bengals to Alumni Arena on Friday at 6pm. It is the first game of a doubleheader with the UB men who take on Fredonia at 8pm.
The game will be streamed on ESPN+ with Paul Peck (play-by-play) and Heather Prusak (color) announcing and can be heard on ESPN 1520 and the Varsity Network with Matt Mattia on the call.
This is the 33rd overall meeting between the two programs, with the Bengals owning a 22-10 series advantage. All previous matchups came when the teams were members of the SUNYAC, with the last meeting coming in 1986.
In a heavyweight battle between two teams picked in the top three in their respective conference's preseason polls, the University at Buffalo women's basketball team defeated Troy 80-78 in the regular season opener at Alumni Arena on Monday night. Four Bulls scored in double figures, led by fifth year guard Chellia Watson who recorded a double-double with a game-high 28 points and 12 rebounds. Sophomore Kirsten Lewis-Williams scored 15 points while Terah Harness and Alexis Davis added 10 points each.
Buffalo held their own on the glass and in the paint against the nation's leading rebounders from a season ago while also turning defense into offense as they scored 25 fastbreak points and turned 11 Troy miscues into 15 points at the other end. The Bulls also found success at the charity stripe, going 27-for-38 on the night.
While the Bulls return just five players overall, those players include three starters and 70% of the offensive production from a squad that earned a trip to the Mid-American Conference Tournament championship game and a postseason WNIT appearance. Buffalo then added six transfers and three freshmen to its 14-player roster.
Buffalo State is coming off a 4-21 overall record. The Bengals doubled their win total from the previous season in 2023-24 while also seeing multiple statistical improvements. The Bengals picked up four wins this past season including an upset conference win over Oswego. Graduate student forward Maddy Stearns returns after leading the team in minutes and scoring in her first year with the Bengals. Senior forward Adiya Jones also returns after a strong close to the season in which she recorded three double-doubles in the final six games of the year. Blair Estarfaa is in his second year at the helm of the Bengals after being announced as the program's ninth head coach in May of 2023. Estarfaa is making his return to Alumni Arena after spending three seasons on the coaching staff at UB, including a MAC Championship as an assistant in 20-22. Before returning to Buffalo, Estarfaa served as the video coordinator and Director of Player Personnel under UB's all-time winningest coach, Felisha Legette-Jack, at Syracuse.
Up next, Buffalo will travel to Princess Anne, Maryland for their first road contest of the season at Maryland Eastern Shore on Wednesday, November 13 at 7pm.
