Dunn’s 24 Points and Game Winning Three Propel Bulls to 83-82 Win at Old Dominion
11/4/2024 11:41:00 PM | Men's Basketball
NORFOLK, Va. – In a game that came down to the wire, the University at Buffalo men's basketball team (1-0, 0-0 MAC) found themselves victorious as Tyson Dunn buried a corner three-pointer with just 1.3-seconds left. The Bulls earned an 83-82 road win at Old Dominion (0-1, 0-0 Sun Belt) for their first win in program history against the Monarchs. This marked the program's first win in the State of Virginia in nearly 20 years as they last beat the Liberty Flames on Dec. 6, 2005, 66-53. The win was also Buffalo's first season opening road win since Nov. 11, 2016, with a 76-66 win at Niagara.
Dunn finished the night with 24 points, 10 assists and 6 rebounds. The last Bull to lead the team in points, rebounds and assists was Jeenathan Williams on Jan. 21, 2022, against Kent State when he recorded 25 points, 11 rebounds and 6 assists.
Bryson Wilson set a new career-high with 15 points while shooting 7-for-11 from the floor. Freshman Ben Michaels added 13 points with Ryan Sabol and Noah Batchelor adding 11 and 10 points, respectively. The last time Buffalo have five scorers with at least 10 points was on Jan. 30, 2024, at Ohio. Batchelor also added 6 rebounds and a block.
As a team the Bulls were 32-for-57 (.561) from the floor, including 10-of-22 (.455) from three-point range. In the paint, the Bulls outscored the Monarchs, 42-32.
With his first shot as a Bull, Batchelor put the Bulls in front with a three-pointer in the corner to make it a 3-2 lead. This was the start to Buffalo's best scoring run of the night as a 7-0 run gave them a 7-2 lead. The Monarchs' offense started to click as they took a 21-15 lead after utilizing a 7-1 run with 10:17 left in the first half. Dunn started to heat up as he scored 12 points by the half. At the half, despite getting out-rebounded, 25-15, and not recording an offensive rebound, the Bulls led, 43-38. From three-point range, Buffalo was 7-for-12 (.583) as the Monarchs were just 3-for-12 (.250).
Buffalo's offense stayed hot to start the second half as they managed to take a 59-47 lead after a Michaels turnaround jumper. After looking as though the Bulls would have a cushioned lead down the late portion of the game, the Monarchs went on an 8-0 run in just a 47-second span, but the Bulls still led, 67-66. With a thundering crowd of 5,455 in Chartway Arena, Old Dominion made a go ahead three with just 17-seconds left to go up 82-80, then the Bulls made their way down the court. With the ball in his hands, Dunn passed it to Batchelor on the inside give, but with no one on him, Dunn was wide open in the corner and drilled the shot to put the Bulls up, 83-82.
"I'm just so proud of our guys," stated Head Coach George Halcovage III. "Going into a tough road environment, sticking together and facing a lot of different situations: down early, come back, get a lead early, get a lead into halftime, extend our lead, they make a great run, our charge at the end, and then we have to make the plays at the end of the game and stick together, which our guys did.
"Tyson [Dunn] just brings an incredible leadership and maturity to the team. He also cares so much about doing the right thing as a player on and off the court and is a great example to the other guys. He's helping us teach some of these younger guys just how to compete every day in college basketball and it showed tonight."
The Bulls are back in action on Friday against Fredonia as part of a double-header with the women's team hosting Buffalo State. Tip-off for the men is at 8 p.m. on ESPN+.
