BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo women's volleyball team (16-15, 12-6 MAC) look to win the program's first Mid-American Conference (MAC) title this weekend in Bowling Green, Ohio. The five-seeded Bulls will play the four-seeded Western Michigan Broncos (17-12, 13-5 MAC) in the quarterfinals tomorrow at 4 p.m. The MACtion can be seen on ESPN+.
Prior to the tournament, the MAC announced their postseason awards on Wednesday afternoon. The Bulls took home three honors as both Abby Leigh and Katrin Trebichavska earned First-Team All-MAC honors with Mandy Leigh earning Second-Team All-MAC honors. This marked the third consecutive season the Bulls have taken home at least three postseason awards.
In the MAC Tournament, Buffalo is just 4-15 overall in 15 appearances. Under Head Coach Scott Smith, the Bulls are 2-3 in three appearances. The all-time series against Western Michigan has been a one-sided affair. The Broncos lead the series, 30-6, but the Bulls split the season series this year. Buffalo swept the defending MAC Champions on Sept. 28. In the MAC Tournament, the Bulls are 0-3 against the Broncos.
The Bulls ended their regular season with a pair of wins over the Eastern Michigan Eagles. In both matches, the Bulls won, 3-1.
The Bulls are 10th in the nation with 208 total aces, which is also second in the MAC. Trebichavska leads the MAC and is 17th nationally in aces per set with 0.52. On the season, she has 50 which is 23rd in the country. The outside hitter is currently seventh in program history with 173 career aces.
Abby Leigh leads the team with a .388 hitting percentage that is good for 31st in the nation and third in the MAC. In just conference play, she is hitting .382, good for third in the MAC.
Maria Futey is just the third Bull in program history to reach the 1,600-career dig. Last weekend, the senior libero racked up 32 digs against Eastern Michigan.
With a win over the Broncos, the Bulls would face the one-seeded Bowling Green Falcons (21-8, 16-2 MAC) on Saturday at 4 p.m.
