BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team (4-0) will play three straight Big 4 contests, beginning on Friday as they travel across town to take on Canisius in a 6pm contest at the Koessler Athletic Center.
The game will be streamed on ESPN+ with Jay Moran (play-by-play) and Richard Walsh (color) announcing and can be heard on AM 1400 and the Varsity Network with Jack Kreuzer on the call.
This is the 32nd overall meeting between Buffalo and Canisius with the Golden Griffins owning a 31-20 series advantage. The Bulls have won nine of the last 10 meetings, most recently a 69-60 win at Alumni Arena last season.
Buffalo remained perfect on the season with a 77-57 wire-to-wire victory over Cedarville University on Monday night. Three Bulls scored in double figures led by Noelani Cornfield who recorded a new career-high with 20 points to go along with six assists, while Chellia Watson also stuffed the stat sheet with 20 points, six rebounds and five assists. Senior forward Ariana Seawell scored in double-digits for the first time in her UB career with 10 points.
The Bulls have three players averaging in double figures on the season, led by Watson who is leading the team in scoring (23.5 ppg) and rebounding (5.8 rpg). Sophomore Kirsten Lewis-Williams is averaging 11.8 points per game while Cornfield is averaging 11.0 points per contest while leading the team and the conference in assists (28).
Canisius is 1-3 overall after falling to St. Bonaventure 66-63 on Tuesday. The Golden Griffins were picked to finish last MAAC preseason coaches poll after going 17-14 a year ago. Canisius returns just three players, and no starters, from a season ago while adding 12 newcomers to the roster. Franka Wittenberg leads Canisius offensively as she is averaging 8.8 points per game while Jaela Johnson is averaging 7.8 points per contest while leading the team in assists (16). The Golden Griffins have defended the perimeter at a high rate to start the season as they lead the MAAC in three-point defense (.246). Canisius has an international flare as it boasts a roster of six international players, including junior Mariam Sanogo who is the program's first France-born player.
Up next, Buffalo will continue Big 4 action on Tuesday, November 26 as they face off against the Niagara Purple Eagles. Tipoff from the Gallagher Center is set for 6pm.
