MUNCIE, Ind. – The University at Buffalo cross country team competed at Mid-American Conference Championships on Saturday afternoon. The Buffalo men took fourth of the nine programs competing, as the women finished 10th of 12 teams.
The men trailed Toledo, Miami and Eastern Michigan enroute to their fourth-place finish. The Bulls top three finishers ran in a pack across the finish line, with Evan Hilbert taking 18th (24:50.49), Matt Gensel in 19th (24:51.62) and Jacob Brink placing 20th (24:53.27). Gensel's time beat his previous personal best (24.54.3) by just over two seconds. Sean O'Brien (26th, 25:10.45) and Luke Stoeffler (37th, 25:31.58) rounded out Buffalo's top five. Both O'Brien and Stoeffler's times were season-bests.
The Bulls had three more runners place inside the top 50. Freshman Vincent Guaresimo finished 40th (25:35.39), Gabriel Cornfield placed 45th (25:45.46) and freshman Collin Stafford took 48th (25:50.89). Freshman Connor Domoy was just outside the top 50, placing 53rd with a time of 26:12.71.
"We didn't have our full squad for this one, but we had guys step up to represent Buffalo and our program," said Associate Head Coach Todd Witzleben. "I'm proud of the way these men were able to battle through adversity."
On the women's side, Lacey Danilovitz headlined for the fifth time this season, being the Bulls' top finisher in all five of the races she's competed in. The sophomore placed 40th in the field of 98 runners, finishing the race with a time of 22:11.98. Danilovitz was just over a second shy of her 6k personal best time of 22:10.1, set earlier this season at the Paul Short Invite.
Graduate transfer Eliza Medearis was the second Buffalo runner to complete the course for the women, finishing 43rd with a new personal best time of 22:14.27. Bronagh Cassidy took third to put herself inside Buffalo's top three for the fourth time this season, this time finishing 50th with a season-best 6k time of 22:27.94. Vassi Klock (62nd, 22:43.7) and Megan Smith (82nd, 23:28.40) rounded out the Bulls' top five. Smith's time was a season-best.
A herd of Bulls followed the top five, with three more runners finishing within ten seconds of Smith. Allison Newton placed 83rd (23:28.91), Chloe Freeland took 84th (23:28.91) and Anna Recktenwalt finished 85th (23:35.92). Recktenwalt and Freeland's times were season-bests.
"Both teams battled through adversity this season," said Program Director and Head Coach Vicki Mitchell. "Today we have several student-athletes step up for the team and run their best races. We are proud of their efforts. They represented our program and our university well."
