11/13/2024 3:08:00 PM | Cross Country
BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo cross country team is set to participate in the NCAA Northeast Regionals this Friday afternoon in Hopkinton State Park, New Hampshire. The top two men's and women's teams from each region are selected to participate in the NCAA Championships.
The Buffalo men enter the regional round of NCAA competition still holding the 15th spot in the Northeast region. The Bulls last competed at MAC Cross Country Championships, taking fourth with a score of 120 points. Buffalo trailed three regionally ranked programs in their fourth-place finish, Toledo (1st), Miami of Ohio (2nd) and Eastern Michigan (3rd), all of which compete in the Great Lakes region.
The Bulls' top three finishers ran in a pack across the finish line, with Evan Hilbert taking 18th (24:50.49), Matt Gensel in 19th (24:51.62) and Jacob Brink placing 20th (24:53.27). Gensel's time beat his previous personal best by just over two seconds (24.54.3). Sean O'Brien (26th, 25:10.45) and Luke Stoeffler (37th, 25:31.58) rounded out Buffalo's top five. Both O'Brien and Stoeffler's times were season-bests.
The Northeast Regionals feature a new challenge for the Bulls, upping the distance from the typical 8k course to a 10k course. The Bulls navigated the challenge last season at regionals, taking 21st of 37 teams, with 590 points.
The distance stays the same for the Buffalo women, competing on a 6k course for the fifth time this season. The Bulls finished 10th of 12 teams at conference championships with 256 points. Lacey Danilovitz placed atop the Buffalo roster for the fifth time this season, being the Bulls' top finisher in all five of the races she's competed in. The sophomore placed 40th in the field of 98 runners, finishing the race with a time of 22:11.98. At MAC Championships, Danilovitz was just over a second shy at of her 6k personal best time of 22:10.1, set earlier this season at the Paul Short Invite.
Graduate transfer Eliza Medearis was the second Buffalo runner to complete the course for the women, finishing 43rd with a new personal best time of 22:14.27. Bronagh Cassidy took third to put herself inside Buffalo's top three for the fourth time this season, finishing 50th with a season-best 6k time of 22:27.94. Vassi Klock (62nd, 22:43.7) and Megan Smith (82nd, 23:28.40) rounded out the Bulls' top five. Smith's time was a season-best.
The women's race begins on Friday at 11 am, with the men's race to follow at 12 pm. All information regarding NCAA Regionals can be accessed here.
