Bulls Fall to Vermont on Tuesday Evening
11/19/2024 10:08:00 PM | Men's Basketball
BURLINGTON, Vt. – The University at Buffalo men's basketball team (2-3, 0-0 MAC) looked to spoil the Vermont Catamounts' (2-3, 0-0 AE) home opener, but fell short, 78-67. In perhaps one of the toughest places to play in the country, the Catamounts defended Roy L. Patrick Gymnasium to improve to 135-20 at home since 2014.
On the night, Ryan Sabol led the Bulls with 22 points. This marked his 14th career game scoring in double figures as he's done so in every game this season. He finished 8-for-16 from the floor and 3-of-5 from three-point range. Noah Batchelor had a career day as he recorded his first double-double with career-high marks in points and rebounds with 16 and 10, respectively. Tim Oboh scored a career-high 8 points as Bryson Wilson added 11. Anquan Boldin Jr. and Wilson had 2 blocks each on the night. At the glass, Lloyd McVeigh tallied 5 rebounds.
The Bulls saw their largest deficit of the first half early as they trailed 13-4. Three early turnovers stalled Buffalo's offense. Oboh knocked down a three-pointer to cut the Catamounts' lead to 6 points. The Bulls managed to chip away at Vermont's lead throughout the first half as they made 11 free throws compared to the home team's 5. Sabol got hot at the end of the half as he scored four straight baskets for the Bulls, good for 9 points. In Sabol's run, he buried a deep three-pointer as the Bulls trailed by just three at the half, 38-35.
The Catamounts came out of the half on a 9-0 run to extend their lead to 47-35. Batchelor found his stroke in the second half as he scored 12, including going 2-of-4 from three-point range. With 8:43 to go, the Bulls cut Vermont's lead to 6 at 60-54. Shortly after making it a two-possession game, a Buffalo's scoring lull combined with a Vermont 8-0 run gave Vermont a 14-point lead with just over 6:30 to go in regulation. The Bulls cut the lead to single digits with under a minute left as Sabol made a three-pointer, but it was too little too late.
The Bulls were just 6-of-19 (31.6%) from deep compared to Vermont's 9-of-21 (42.9%).
"I felt our team battled tonight to give ourselves a chance in a very tough road environment," stated Head Coach George Halcovage III. "The margin for error is slim on the road, especially against a veteran, battled test team like Vermont.
"We did not get off to a good start in either half, which forced us to play from behind. We need to improve our starts to games moving forward, as we did against ODU & Notre Dame in earlier games. We will get back to work tomorrow to learn from tonight's film and to start our preparation for Morgan State on Friday night."
The Bulls are back in action on Friday as they host the Morgan State Bears (3-2, 0-0 MEAC) as part of the Buffalo Classic. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
