BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo swimming & diving team opens their 2024-25 season on Saturday, October 12th, at 12 pm in the Alumni Arena Natatorium and Dorsi Raynolds Pool against Cornell University.
The Bulls enter the new season with 24 returning student-athletes and five newcomers. Head Coach Andy Bashor enters his 19th season at the helm of the Buffalo Swimming & Diving program, with Head Diving Coach Russ Dekker beginning his tenth season leading the diving team.
NCAA National Championships qualifier and reigning Mid-American Conference champion Marialis Kwak enters her senior season looking to pick up where she left off. Kwak became the third Buffalo diver in program history to win gold medals in both one-meter and three-meter diving at the same MAC Championship. She later qualified for the NCAA National Championships after finishing inside the top three in both diving events.
Presley Dorsett earned a bronze medal in three-meter diving too with a score of 279.55. Now sophomore Sophie Meuwissen was also honored as the MAC Freshman Diver of the Year, the fourth time in program history that a Buffalo freshman has earned the honor.
Mia Naccarella, an Olympic Trials qualifier this past summer, returns as a graduate student-athlete looking to break more school records. Last season Naccarella broke the program record for the 100-yard backstroke at the Princeton Invitational with a time of 53.25. The senior doubled back to break her own school record later in the season at MAC Championships, finishing the event with a time of 52.74.
Naccarella also set a new personal record of 1:56.21 in the 200-yard backstroke that ranks third in program history and a new personal record in the 200-yard freestyle, with her time of 1:47.14 ranking fifth all-time in program history. Naccarella also had the Bulls' fastest times in the 50-yard (22.92) and 100-yard freestyles (49.58), also competing on the team's fastest 200-yard (1:33.09) and 400-yard freestyle relay (3:21.80) teams at MAC Championships.
With several injuries to upperclassmen last season, the Bulls had to rely on incoming freshmen to contribute. Through a season of hard work and dedication from the freshman and the coaching staff, Buffalo's newcomers rolled into MAC Championships ready to contribute in the team's biggest moments.
As Naccarella broke her school record in the finals round of the 100-yard backstroke, freshman Vivian Roy tailed just seconds behind, finishing eighth in the finals round with a new personal record time of 55.02. Roy's time joined the all-time program ranks, slotting in at fifth to end her freshman campaign. Grace Rider also made noise at MAC's. The freshman set a personal best 100-yard breaststroke time of 1:03.05, which ranked seventh all-time in program history.
The Bulls have five newcomers, four swimmers and one diver. Freshman Alexandra Ericson will compete in the backstroke and individual medley events. Isabella Forsman is set to compete in the individual medley and butterfly events. Local to Buffalo, Ava Pauly will compete in the breaststroke and freestyle events. Maddy Schnelzer specializes in the backstroke and individual medley events. Daphne Fox joins the diving program looking to become another asset to an already strong team.
Support the Bulls as they take on Cornell on October 12th at 12 pm. Buffalo Swimming & Diving will host four more home events this season, including the annual UB Diving Invite and this year's MAC Championships. A complete schedule can be accessed here.
