LEXINGTON, Ky. – The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced their 16th class of Coaches 4 Coaches Scholarship recipients on Wednesday afternoon. This program's funds cover registration and hotel costs to bring a group of 18 up-and-coming volleyball coaches to their first AVCA Convention. Of those selected, current University at Buffalo Volleyball Assistant Coach Julia Kurowski was selected.
"On behalf of the committee I would like to congratulate the 2024 scholarship recipients," says Jaime Gordon, AVCA CEO and Coaches 4 Coaches Committee Chair. "There was a tremendous pool of applicants for our 16th year, and that made the committee's work challenging.
"We are confident that this group of 18 represents the passion and commitment of their peers and that they will be outstanding ambassadors for the Coaches 4 Coaches program. I am grateful for the time and commitment that the committee has dedicated to these applicants, as well as the many individuals that give so generously to make this program possible."
During the Convention, which will take place Dec. 18-22 in Louisville, Ky., scholarship recipients will have the opportunity to network with successful coaches from all levels and take part in a diverse group of educational opportunities that make this an annual can't-miss event.
"Julia Kurowski was a standout player at Colgate University from 2018-22 and then played overseas in both France and Sweden," stated Head Coach Scott Smith. "As a local of Buffalo, NY I had kept a close eye on her career in the hopes that she would return and want to pursue coaching as a profession. Through our respective programs numerous interactions over the years in both sanctioned play and exhibition matches it was clear that she had all the traits that one would desire in an assistant coach. As part of our staff this season, Julia has worked primarily with our setters and helped with our overall offense. Her other duties include handling social media and assisting with travel logistics.
"Julia has the personality and demeanor to excel as a coach at any level of volleyball. Her ability to relate her specific experiences and first-hand knowledge as a player have already begun to have a positive effect upon the team here at University at Buffalo. Her passion for training and teaching the sport of volleyball is evident on the practice court, in the office, and on the sideline.
"She is an excellent role model for our team and already a great coach in her first season. I believe she is a perfect candidate for the Coaches 4 Coaches scholarship and will be able to pay it forward in the years to come."
