BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo women's volleyball team (8-10, 4-1 MAC) will stay on the road as they face the Miami (OH) RedHawks (7-10, 0-5 MAC) on Friday evening followed by the Ball State Cardinals (9-7, 2-3 MAC) on Saturday. Both matches can be seen on ESPN+.
The all-time series against Miami has been in favor of the RedHawks. They lead the series, 34-16, but the Bulls are winners of six straight and have swept the opposition in four of the last five matches. Head Coach Scott Smith is 7-3 against Miami in his tenure at Buffalo. The RedHawks were picked 10th in the MAC Preseason Coaches' Poll with 32 points. Last season they finished with a 5-25 overall record and 1-17 in MAC play. Currently, Miami is 0-5 in conference play.
The Ball State Cardinals have dominated the all-time series against the Bulls. The Cardinals hold a 28-3 advantage over the Bulls, however, Buffalo has won the last two meetings. Last season, the Bulls finished ahead of the Cardinals in the MAC standings as they both finished with a 13-5 conference record. Ball State was selected to finish third in the MAC Preseason Coaches' Poll with 98 points and one tournament championship vote.
The Bulls are coming off a 3-1 win at Akron on Tuesday evening which extended their win streak to four and improve to 4-1 in conference play. The win marked Head Coach Scott Smith's 80th win at Buffalo. He's just the third coach at Buffalo to reach this milestone behind Peter Weinrich (1975-80, 107-121-4) and Robert Maxwell (1981-98, 409-285-8).
The Bulls have had their way in conference play. They're the only team in the MAC to have three players in the top-10 in service aces and in points per set. Katrin Trebichavska and Maria Futey are tied for second at 0.63 with Abby Leigh in seventh with 0.43 aces per set. In points per set, Manoela Forlin is second in the MAC (4.68) as Trebichavska (4.56) and A. Leigh (3.79) are third and 10th, respectively.
Trebichavska leads the MAC in aces per set with 0.67 throughout the 2024 campaign. On the season, she has 30 which is 20th in the country. The outside hitter is four aces shy of passing Maria Perry (1984-87, 159) for eighth all-time in program history in career aces. As a team, the Bulls are 19th in the nation with 118 aces.
A. Leigh leads the team with a .404 hitting percentage that is good for 27th in the nation and second in the MAC. Leigh hit a career-high .786 against Kent State last Saturday with 11 kills on 14 attempts and no errors. This marked her 16th career match with no errors with a minimum of 10 attacks.
Maria Futey passed Lindsay Matikosh (2000-03, 1,414) for fourth all-time in career digs after her 12-dig performance in Tuesday's win at Akron. Futey is up to 1,422 career digs after transitioning into the team's libero in the middle of the 2022 season.
Following this weekend the Bulls will be back at Alumni Arena as they host the Bowling Green Falcons on Thursday and the Toledo Rockets on Friday of homecoming weekend.
