HAMILTON, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo cross country team competed at the Harry Lang XC Invitational hosted by Colgate University on Saturday morning. The men placed third of nine teams at the event, finishing with 75 points. The women placed fourth of nine with 101 points, headlined by first place finisher, freshman Aleksandra Szulska.
On the men's side, six Bulls finished consecutively, all placing inside the top twenty. Senior William Marchant led the pack, placing 13th with a time of 19:40.6, with five Bulls falling in behind; Sean O'Brien (14th place, 19:40.7), Jacob Brink (15th place, 19:40.8), Noah Brightman (16th place, 19:41.1), Luke Stoeffler (17th place, 19.41.4) and Matt Gensel (18th, 19:44.8).
"We had a lot of freshmen, and a few other young athletes compete in their first cross country race in the blue and black," said Associate Head Coach, Todd Witzleben.
For the women's 5k, Szulska placed first in her NCAA debut, with a time of 17:57.7. Also making their blue and black debuts, freshmen Lacey Danilovitz (19th, 19:05.1) and Juliette Salazar (24th, 19:17.7) finished strong for the Bulls, with sophomores Paris Welker (29th, 19:25.4) and Bronagh Cassidy (37th, 19:38.8) falling in after to cap off the Bulls' top-five finishers.
"The individual win for Szulska was exciting in her debut. Our top three finishers were all freshmen, followed by three sophomores," stated Head Coach Vicki Mitchell. "Both groups will look to continue that momentum into next week's showdown in Happy Valley at the Penn State Invitational."
The Bulls next event is Friday, September 8, when they travel to Penn State to participate in the Spiked Shoe Event.
