Women’s Soccer Adds A Pair to Roster

BUFFALO, NY - University at Buffalo women's soccer head coach Shawn Burke announced the signing of a pair of players in freshman Ava Maldonado and Monmouth University transfer Rebecca Winslow to the fall roster. With these additions, the defending Mid-American Conference champions will now welcome a total of 10 student-athletes to its 2023 squad.
Maldonado, a defender/midfielder, hails from McDonough, GA where she had a standout career at Union Grove High School. She earned Georgia Athletic Coaches Association's Class AAAAA All-State Girls Soccer Team honorable mention honors and was a First-Team All-Region selection as a junior after recording eight goals and four assists and helping Union Grove to a 12-5-2 record and a 2-AAAAA title while guiding the Wolverines to the second round of the state playoffs. She is also a member of the GSA ECNL G06 club team that has consistently ranked in the top three of the ECNL Southeast Conference. Off the pitch, Maldonado was an AP and honors student, graduating from high school in just three years.
Burke on Maldonado: Ava is a versatile player who adds immediate depth to our midfield and backline. Her club experience in Georgia has prepared her for this level.
Winslow, a 5-8 goalkeeper from Cherry Hill, New Jersey, comes to Buffalo after a successful three-year stint at Monmouth University. As a sophomore, Winslow played in 15 matches while making 14 starts in goal, compiling a 9-3-1 overall record in between the pipes and recording 36 saves while posting a .706 save percentage and a 1.08 goals against average. She finished second in the MAAC with five clean sheets, including holding Quinnipiac scoreless in the MAAC Tournament Championship match. As a freshman, she appeared in eight games in the Spring 2021 season, compiling a 4-1-3 record with four shutouts and a 0.37 goals-against average. She closed the season with three consecutive shutouts in the MAAC Tournament against Niagara, Quinnipiac and Siena.
Prior to collegiate play, Winslow was a letterwinner at Cherry Hill High School East, earning Second Team All-Conference and Team MVP Award honors as a junior … Second Team All-Conference as junior. She played club soccer for the SJEB Rush USSDA 01/02 Girls team that won the US Youth Soccer National Championship in 2018 and was a finalist in 2019 and were two-time US Youth Soccer National League Red Division Champions and State Champions, US Youth Soccer Eastern Regional League Champions in 2017 and finalists in 2018. She also played two seasons of varsity basketball. Off the pitch she was a member of the Cum Laude National Honor Society and the Science National Honor Society was Cherry Hill East Student of Character award recipient and an Honor Roll student.
