
The Bulls Ramp Up for the 2023 Season in Alabama

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo softball team will begin their 2023 campaign on Friday morning against Army West Point at 11 a.m. ET. The tournament was originally going to be hosted by Mercer, but due to significant weather in the Georgia area, Jacksonville State University will host the now Jax State Season Opener.

Head Coach Mike Ruechel enters his fifth season as the head coach at Buffalo in 2023. Last season, the Bulls finished with an overall record of 22-24 and 13-14 in MAC play. The 13 conference wins are the second most in program history as the Bulls had 16 in 2021. Discipline at the plate caused the Bulls to rack up 162 walks on the season, the second most in program history. Also coming in the top-five in the record book were total runs (185), home runs (38), and RBIs (168). Alexis Lucyshyn was named to the All-MAC Second Team list as seven Bulls earned Academic All-MAC honors.
The Bulls bring 10 new faces to the roster, including nine freshmen and one transfer. Brianna Castro, Alexis Lucyshyn, Mykaela Martin, and Kate Vara will bring the veteran experience as they're the lone seniors for the young squad.
On Thursday morning, the Mid-American Conference announced this season's pre-season coaches' poll. The Bulls were selected fifth with a total of 65 points. Ahead of Buffalo was Miami (OH) receiving 120 points and 10 first place votes, Central Michigan with 109 points and one first place vote, followed by Ohio (90), and Ball State (82).
