
Bulls Fall to Army and Jacksonville State to Open the Season

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – The University at Buffalo softball team (0-2, 0-0 MAC) opened their season at the Jax State Season Opener on Friday morning. In the double header, the Bulls fell to Army West Point (1-0, 0-0 Patriot), 5-2, then lost to host Jacksonville State (1-0, 0-0 ASun) in five innings, 9-0.
Game 1 vs. Army West Point
The Bulls struggled to get the bats going in the season opener against Army as they were hitless through three innings of play. Army capitalized in the bottom of the first inning scoring on a wild pitch from Alexis Lucyshyn. The Black Knights added two more to their cause in the second inning with a two-RBI double to take a 3-0 lead. Lucyshyn went 1-2-3 in the third, striking out two.
In the top of the fourth with one out, Abbey Nagel stepped up to the plate and delivered a solo home run to put the Bulls on the board. In the fifth, Nagel came through for the Bulls as she had an RBI single with Sara Kelly scoring.
Buffalo dropped the contest, 5-2, with Lucyshyn pitching 4.2 innings, striking out six. Emily Watters came in for relief going 1.1 innings allowing two hits and striking out two.
Game 2 vs. Jacksonville State
Against the Jacksonville State Gamecocks, the offense continued to struggle as the Bulls only had two hits. Lucyshyn and Kelly were the lone Bulls to reach base in the contest. Kelly reached twice with a single and walk.
The Gamecocks were hot out of the gate as they had two two-run homers in the bottom of the first to take a 4-0 lead. Jacksonville State continued to score in the second inning off an RBI double and single to make it 6-0. The Bulls forced the Gamecocks into three groundouts in the third inning to keep it at 6-0. In the fourth inning, the Bulls couldn't stop the offense as Jacksonville State added three more runs to make it 9-0.
The Bulls are back in action tomorrow at 10 a.m. ET against Army West Point.
