Bulls Host Northern Illinois on National Girls & Women In Sports Day at Alumni Arena on Saturday

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team (9-9, 4-5 MAC) looks to make it two in a row as they host Northern Illinois on National Girls & Women In Sports Day at Alumni Arena on Saturday.
As part of the National Girls & Women in Sports Day celebration, there will be multi-sport clinic, run by UB student-athletes representing our female varsity sports, starting at 11am in the Ed Wright Practice facility for girls in grades 4-8 with the women's basketball game to follow at 2pm with various in-game promotions and activities.
The game will be streamed on ESPN+ with Paul Peck (play-by-play) and Brian Koziol (color) announcing and can be heard on the radio on AM 1400 or on the Varsity Network with Jack Kreuzer on the call.
This is the 30th overall meeting between Buffalo and Northern Illinois with the Huskies owning a 19-10 series advantage. The Bulls split the two meetings with the Huskies last season, with each team victorious on their home court.
Buffalo led for all but 40 seconds and were clutch from the free throw line in the final minutes as they earned a hard-fought 81-76 win over Miami (OH) at Millett Hall on Wednesday night. Four Bulls scored in double figures led by Re'Shawna Stone who scored 22 points. Fellow fifth year Zakiyah Winfield narrowly missed out on a double-double with 19 points and nine rebounds to go with four assists. Her backcourt mate Jazmine Young scored 15 points while freshman Hattie Ogden added 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting from behind the arc.
Winfield leads the team in scoring, rebounding and assists at 14.9 ppg, 10.6 rpg and 3.9 apg and has recorded 11 double-doubles on the season. She is the top rebounding guard in the nation and ranks in the top 20 in the nation in double-doubles, rebounds per game and defensive rebounds per game. Stone is averaging 14.8 ppg and has scored in double figures in 13 of the last 14 games while adding 5.2 rebounds and 3.4 assists per contest. Young has scored in double figures in 15 of 18 games, including nine straight, and is averaging 14.1 points and 1.7 assists per contest. The Bulls rank in the top half of the MAC in scoring defense (62.9), rebounding defense (34.8), 3FG defense (30.6), field goal percentage (43.5) and assists per game (12.6).
The Northern Illinois Huskies are 10-10 overall and 2-7 in the MAC after falling at Ball State 76-68 on Wednesday. Senior guard Chelby Koker leads the Huskies in scoring and assists at 15.6 ppg and 3.6 apg. A'Jah Davis (15.0 ppg, 11.4 rpg) and Janae Poisson (10.1 ppg are also scoring in double figures. Koker has scored in double figures in 13 of the last 14 games and is in the top-10 in the MAC in six different statistical categories, ranking fourth in steals at 2.1 per game and fifth in free throw shooting at 84.7%. Davis leads the MAC and ranks eighth nationally in rebounding with 11.4 per game. She also ranks seventh in the nation in offensive rebounding (4.7) and double-doubles (13). The Huskies are third in the MAC with 38.3 rebounds per game. NIU has had 35+ boards in 15 of 20 games. The Huskies are also second in the MAC in offensive rebounding with 13.5 offensive boards per game. NIU has had five or more steals in each game this season and are averaging 16.7 points off turnovers per game.
Up next, Buffalo will head back on the road for a two-game stretch, beginning Wednesday, January 8 at Toledo.
