EL PASO, Texas – The University at Buffalo softball team (1-5, 0-0 MAC) dropped two games on Thursday at the UTEP Invitational. In the double header, the Bulls fell to the Texas Tech Red Raiders (4-2, 0-0 Big 12), 3-1. Following the first game, the Bulls lost to the UTEP Miners (4-2, 0-0 C-USA), 4-1.
Game 1 vs. Texas Tech
The Bulls got on the board early against the Red Raiders. Abbey Nagel stayed hot as she had an RBI double in the first inning. Brianna Castro gave the Bulls a 1-0 lead. This was all the offense the Bulls would get as they had just two more hits the rest of the game.
Buffalo held onto their lead into the fifth inning off a spectacular pitching performance by Julia Tarantino. She would go the distance pitching all seven innings, allowing three runs, and striking out six. The Red Raiders scored two in the fifth inning and added an insurance run in the top of the sixth to hold a 3-1 lead.
Kendall Fritz of Texas Tech went 6.2 innings and struck out 12 Bulls.
Game 2 vs. UTEP
In the second game of the day, the Bulls took a 1-0 lead in the top of fourth against the UTEP Miners. Lily Lauck singled to center for Alexis Lucyshyn rounding the bases to score. It didn't take long for the Miners to respond as they had a sacrifice fly to score a run and tie the game at one. The next batter then homered to right to take a 2-1 lead.
The next inning, the Miners extended their lead to three as they homered to center, taking a 4-1 lead.
Despite having 10 hits in the game, the Bulls could not find their way home as they stranded 11 on the base paths. Lucyshyn led the team with three hits as Lauck and Carina Catalano had two each.
The Bulls are back in action tomorrow at noon ET against Santa Clara. They will then play New Mexico at 9 p.m. ET to wrap up their action at the UTEP Invitational.
