The Bulls Head Down to Texas for the UTEP Invitational

EL PASO, Texas – The University at Buffalo softball team (1-3, 0-0 MAC) is set to begin their second weekend of the 2023 season on Thursday. The Bulls will participate at the inaugural Dr. Natalicio Memorial Tourney hosted by UTEP.
Buffalo enters the weekend with a 1-3 record, but the Bulls are being led offensively by freshman Abbey Nagel, who is batting .385 with five, including a double and home run. Madison Fernimen batted .357 during the opening weekend of play, with a team-high slugging percentage of .714.
In the circle, senior Alexis Lucyshyn is 1-1 with a 3.60 ERA as she struck out 10 batters in 11.2 innings pitched. Fellow pitcher Julia Tarantino started one game during the opening weekend and recorded 11 strikeouts.
The Bulls will open the tournament on Thursday afternoon at 3 p.m. ET against Texas Tech. The Red Raiders enter the weekend with a 3-2 record as they played at UT Arlington Tournament last weekend. Ellie Bailey leads the Red Raiders offensively with a .455 batting average and seven runs batted in. Abbie Orrick has gone deep twice on the season. The pitching staff has been dominant as they have a combined ERA of 1.32. Sage Hoover is 2-0 not allowing an earned run in 9.1 innings pitched.
UB will then play the host UTEP Miners following their game against the Red Raiders at 6 p.m. ET. UTEP is 3-2 on the season having opened at the Wildcat Invitational hosted by Abilene Christian. The Miners have three players hitting .500 or better with Savannah Favre hitting a team-best .579. Mackenzee Collins has appeared in two games, pitching a total of 11.0 innings. She has an impressive 1.91 ERA on the season.
The Bulls will open Friday at noon ET when they face Santa Clara. The Broncos went 0-4 during their opening weekend. As a team, they're only hitting .196 with Ashley Trierweiler leading the team at .385. Freshman pitcher Hazyl Gray has a 0.70 ERA through 10.0 innings pitched
Buffalo will then wrap up play this weekend against New Mexico at 9 p.m. ET on Friday evening. The Lobos went 2-3 at the LSU Invitational last weekend. Maddie Boldt has hit the long ball three times this season hitting in eight runs. She has a slugging percentage of 1.214. As a team, they hold an ERA of 6.22 and have walked 16 batters on the year.
