BUFFALO, NY – University at Buffalo women's basketball fifth year guard Re'Shawna Stone had a career night, but the Bulls came up one possession short as a game-tying shot attempt missed the mark and Kent State escaped with a 72-69 win at Alumni Arena on Wednesday night.
Stone put on a show for the fans inside Alumni Arena, scoring a career-high 36 points on 13-of-20 shooting to go with five rebounds and three assists. The Waynesville, MO native is the first Bull to score 30 or more since Dyaisha Fair scored 30 in the MAC Championship game last season.
Joining Stone in double figures was Zakiyah Winfield, who recorded her 13th double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds while dishing out a team-best five assists.
Winfield attacked early as she got a pair of jumpers to fall before Stone hit Emerita Mashaire with a no look pass on the block for a layup and to give UB an early lead. Later, Stone knocked down a three and Winfield stopped and popped for a mid-range jumper as the Bulls took a 18-13 lead at the first media timeout. Winfield stayed aggressive as she scored in the paint and then Mashaire grabbed an offensive rebound and powered up for the second chance layup to put UB up 23-17 at the end of the first.
Winfield got to the basket again off a strong take on UB's first possession of the second quarter, but Kent State used a 10-2 run to tie the game at 27 and force a Buffalo timeout at the 6:18 mark. Stone and Winfield got UB back on track out of the timeout, scoring on two straight possessions, before Jazmine Young knocked down a three from the wing to put UB up by four at the 4:22 mark. Later, Young converted a tough driving layup off glass and Stone followed with a pair of layups before Mashaire got an offensive rebound putback at the buzzer to give the Bulls a 44-26 lead at the break. Buffalo held Kent State scoreless for the final two minutes of the quarter and shot a blistering 54.5% from the floor in the opening half.
Stone continued to heat up as she used a great behind the back move to score off glass on UB's first possession of the second quarter and then got another reverse layup to go to put Buffalo up by nine at the 5:57 mark. There would be no stopping her a couple possessions later as she sliced through the paint and got a layup to go plus the foul to give the Bulls a 53-47 lead at the media timeout. Kent State used a 5-0 run to cut the UB lead to four with just over two minutes to play in the quarter, but Stone answered with a big triple and Buffalo maintained a 59-54 lead at the end of the third.
Kent State came out aggressive to start the fourth quarter, converting an and-one bucket on their first possession to pull within two but Stone used a beautiful stutter step stop-and-go move for a layup off glass and then found Hattie Ogden for a spot up triple as UB led 64-60 at the 7:11 mark. Kent State pounded it inside for a pair of layups to tie the game at 64 but the Bulls stayed poise late in the shot clock as Mashaire found Winfield under the basket for a layup to give UB a 66-64 lead at the final media timeout. The Golden Flashes tied the game at 66 on their first possession out of the break and then took their first lead of the game, 68-66, with 3:12 remaining. Later, with Kent State up by five, Winfield found Stone who drained a deep three from the wing to pull UB within two with just under one minute to go. The Golden Flashes then went 1-of-2 from the free throw line to take a three-point lead with 26 seconds remaining. Buffalo called timeout but Stone's desperation heave at the buzzer missed the mark as time expired.
Buffalo shot 47% from the floor but was just 10-of-18 from the charity stripe on the night. UB scored 40 points in the paint and added 10 second chance points, but the Bulls allowed 42 points inside on the other end and Kent State scored eight points off UB turnovers and held a one rebound advantage on the glass.
Buffalo returns to action on Saturday as they welcome the Miami (OH) RedHawks to Alumni Arena at 2pm.
