BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's tennis team defeated Siena 7-0 in dominating fashion on a historic day at Miller Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon. With the win, head coach Kristen Maines became the all-time winningest coach in program history with 137 wins.
UB took all three matches in doubles beginning with a 6-2 second doubles victory from Azra Deniz Comlek and Deanne Choo. At third doubles, Gabriella Akopyan and Basak Akbas won 6-2 and the first doubles squad of Pia Schwarz and Ambre Amat earned a hard-fought 7-6 win.
Singles action continued with straight set wins in four of six matches. Schwarz won at first singles, 7-6, 6-2, while Akbas came away with a dominating 6-1, 6-0 victory at two. Akoypan cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win at third singles while Amat battled to a 6-2, 2-6, 10-8 win at four.
Junior Mariana Carvajal Torres also battled back for a tough three-set victory, winning 6-4, 4-6, 10-6 at fifth singles and Choo clinched the shutout with a convincing 6-1, 6-2 win at sixth singles.
"I always say it's not a loss if you learn, and the ladies learned a lot from Friday and improved on what needed to be better today," said Maines.
"As for me, today was so special and I feel so incredibly thankful to be surrounded by so many wonderful colleagues and student-athletes throughout the years at UB. From strength and conditioning, academic advisors, sports information, athletic training, senior leadership and most importantly, Sma who has been on this wild ride the whole time. They have all helped the women's tennis program get to where we are today. I feel so grateful to have been able to call UB home for so many years and look forward to many more victories to come!"
The Bulls return to action on Monday, February 13 at ACC foe Syracuse at 3pm.
