Bulls Fall to Kent State, 72-65

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo men's basketball team (12-13, 6-6 MAC) fell to the Kent State Golden Flashes (20-5, 10-2 MAC) on Friday evening, 72-65. Off the bench, Zid Powell led the team with 15 points and two blocks. LaQuill Hardnett and Jonnivius Smith scored 14 points each with Smith adding eight rebounds.
The Bulls distributed the ball well in the first half as all eight Bulls that saw the floor scored. Buffalo got out to a 25-14 lead halfway through the first half, but Kent State chipped away. The Golden Flashes went on a 13-3 run over seven minutes forcing Buffalo to three turnovers. The Bulls led 35-29 at the half outscoring the Golden Flashes 7-2 in the final three minutes. Buffalo was 12-for-21 (57.1%) from the floor and 5-of-8 (62.5%) from three-point range to start the game. The Golden Flashes struggled as they shot 32.3% (10-for-31) from the floor in the opening 20-minutes.
The shooting percentages flipped in the second half with Kent State shooting 53.1% and Buffalo shooting at a rate of 37.9%. The Golden Flashes started the second half on a 6-0 to tie the game. Kent State found themselves in foul trouble for the final 12 minutes of the game having seven fouls compared to the Bulls' two. Buffalo couldn't take advantage being in the bonus as they had eight straight fouls called against them. In those final 12 minutes, Kent State outscored Buffalo 29-16. The stifling Kent State defense caused nine second half turnovers, leading to 14 points. Kent State outscored Buffalo 43-30 in the second half.
The Golden Flashes were difficult to box out as they recorded 17 offensive rebounds, finishing with 37 total boards. The 17 offensive rebounds led to 13 second chance points; the Bulls finished with six.
With Buffalo having 21 turnovers on the night, Kent State took advantage despite having 17 of their own. The Golden Flashes outscored the Bulls 29-14 in points from turnovers.
Curtis Jones tied his career-high in assists with eight. Hardnett finished with a season-high four assists.
Buffalo is back in action on Tuesday, Feb. 14 at Ohio for a 7 p.m. tipoff.
