Women’s Soccer Places 12 Student-Athletes on Academic All-MAC Team

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team had another successful campaign in the classroom as 12 student-athletes earned a spot on the Academic All-MAC team, as announced by the conference on Wednesday. It is the third straight year that the Bulls have had a program-record 12 selections on the squad.
A total of 129 student-athletes across the league were named to this year's squad.
Joining the squad for UB were fifth year students Emily Lazenby and Leah Wengender, senior Olivia Bizzoni, juniors Ashleigh Fortunate, Kaylin Ricci, Kaya Schultz and Arianna Zumpano and sophomores Marissa Foster, Katie Krohn, Ashley Reyes, Ellie Simmons and Sarah Woods.
Bizzoni earns Academic All-MAC honors for the third time in her career after also earning a spot on the Academic All-District team for the first time. She did it all for the Bulls as a senior, playing multiple positions in the Bulls' attacking midfield and backline. She appeared and started in all 18 games and tied a career-high with two assists, including on the game-winners at Ohio State and at Colgate, while taking 10 shots.
Fortunate earns Academic All-MAC honors for the first time in her UB career after appearing in a career-best 12 games, including two starts, while recording career-highs in minutes played (267) and shots taken (12).
Foster, a public health major with a 3.548 GPA, also earns Academic All-MAC honors for the first time in her career after appearing in 17 games as a sophomore and recording career-highs with two assists, two assists and 13 shots taken while logging a career-best 490 minutes.
A communication major with a 3.429 GPA, Krohn earns Academic All-MAC honors for the first time in her career. She also garnered First Team All-MAC honors for the first time in her UB career following a sophomore season in which she recorded 13 goals while adding four assists for 30 points.
Lazenby, a history major with a 3.891 GPA, earns also earns Academic All-MAC honors for the second time after being named to the Academic All-District team for the second straight year. She appeared and started in 17 games this season and was an anchor for a UB backline that recorded eight shutouts and a 1.33 goals against average on the year.
Reyes, an exercise science major with a 3.256 GPA, earns Academic All-MAC honors for the second time in her career. She appeared in all 18 games for the Bulls as a sophomore, recording a career-high four points on one goal and two assists while also taking 16 shots and logging a career-best 557 minutes of action.
A health and human services major with a 3.617 GPA, Ricci earns Academic All-MAC honors for the second time. She appeared in 16 games, earning 14 starts, and recorded career-bests with eight shots and 1,076 minutes logged.
Schultz, a public health major with a 3.862 GPA, earns Academic All-MAC honors for the second time in her career after being named to the Academic All-District team for the first time. She was a consistent presence in the Bulls' midfield as she appeared and started in 17 games while recording one assist for UB as a junior.
An exercise science major with a 3.647 GPA, Simmons earns Academic All-MAC honors for the first time in her career after starting all 18 games for the Bulls as a sophomore. She recorded one assist and was a mainstay in a UB backline that recorded eight shutouts and a 1.33 goals against average on the year.
Wengender, a business administration major with a 3.819 GPA, earns Academic All-MAC honors for the third time in her career after being named to the Academic All-District team for the second straight year. She also garnered All-MAC second team honors for the third time in her decorated UB career. The Rochester, NY native continued to bring speed and versatility to the Bulls' attacking midfield, tying a career-high with four goals and 13 points while adding a career-best five assists, all of which came in league play. She finished third on the team with 28 shots and 18 shots on goal.
A health and human services major with a 4.0 GPA, Woods earns Academic All-MAC honors for the first time in her career after being named to the Academic All-District team for the first time. Woods continued to excel and was a force in the Bulls' attack as a sophomore as she recorded two assists and 17 shots on the year.
Zumpano, a mathematics major with a 3.594 GPA, earns Academic All-MAC honors for the second time in her career after being named to the Academic All-District team for the first time. She also earned Second Team All-MAC honors for the first time in her Buffalo career after scoring six total goals on the year, but really took her play up a notch in conference play as five of her goals and all of her career-high three assists came in league action. She finished MAC play ranked tied for seventh in goals (5) and goals per game (0.45) while ranking eighth in points (13) and points per game (1.18). She has also moved into the top 20 in program history for career goals with 17.
