BUFFALO, N.Y. – On Friday at 11am, the Buffalo men's and women's cross country teams will compete at the NCAA Northeast Championships at Van Cortlandt Park in Bronx, N.Y. Both teams competed at MAC Championships, closing out October with a series of promising races.
The men exited the MAC Championship with a fourth-place finish and 109 points. Buffalo was one of three teams to have all five of their top finishers place within the top 30 runners of the field and one of two teams to have their top seven runners place inside the top 40. Senior Evan Hilbert led the pack, earning Second Team All-MAC Honors with a 13th place finish. The performance kept the Bulls in a ranked position in the Northeast Region, remaining at 15th for the third week in a row.
The NCAA Northeast Championships bring a new dynamic for the men's team, who will be running in their first 10k event this season. The field of competition features tough opponents too in nationally ranked Syracuse (8th), Harvard (15th) and Iona (28th), with two conference champions in Stony Brook and University of Massachusetts Lowell as well. The Northeast region also features several strong Ivy League teams, and an Army West Point team that placed second in the Patriot League Cross Country Championships, being the runner up to Navy.
On the women's side, Buffalo placed eighth of 12 teams in the MAC Championships women's 8k, with 241 points. The Bulls came into the competition ranked ninth, finishing ahead of their prerace poll position.
The NCAA Northeast Championships will feature a 6k course for the women, a distance in which the Buffalo women are accustomed to. The Bulls have competed in five 6k races this season, continually improving their times. In their first 6k event of year at the Penn State Spiked Shoe Invitational, the Buffalo women averaged a time of 22:46.32. At the MAC Championships on October 28th, the women finished with an average time of 22:22.58, a near 24 second improvement as a team.
The women enter the NCAA Northeast Championships unranked, with tough competition ahead. The Northeast region holds nationally ranked Harvard (26th), Syracuse (28th) and Providence (29th), with four schools who won their conference championships in Army West Point, Quinnipiac, Binghamton and previously mentioned Harvard. The region also has ten schools who had podium finishes at conference championships.
The women start the meet with the 6k race beginning at 11am, and the men will follow with their 10k race at 12pm. For more coverage of Buffalo men's and women's cross country, follow the program on X (@UB_XCTF), Instagram (@BullsTFXC) and Facebook ("Buffalo Track & Cross Country").
