BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team will open the 2023-24 season, the second in the Becky Burke era, on Monday night as they welcome crosstown rival Canisius to Alumni Arena at 5pm. It is the first game of a doubleheader with the UB men who take on FDU at 7:30pm.
The game will be streamed on ESPN+ with Kevin Sylvester (play-by-play) and Matt Mattia (color) announcing and can be heard on the radio on ESPN 1520AM or on the Varsity Network with Jack Kreuzer on the call.
This is the 51st meeting between Buffalo and Canisius with the Golden Griffins owning a 31-19 series edge. Canisius defeated UB 57-55 at the Koessler Center a year ago.
The Bulls have had success in their regular season openers since joining Division I in 1991-92, going 22-10 in the first game of the season over that span.
Buffalo used a big fourth quarter to pull away for a 58-42 win over the Daemen Wildcats in an exhibition contest at Alumni Arena on Saturday afternoon. Three Bulls scored in double figures, led by redshirt senior guard Chellia Watson and freshman guard Kirsten Lewis-Williams who recorded a game-high 13 points each. Also in double figures was graduate student forward Kiara Johnson who added 10 points. The Bulls turned defense into offense as they scored 20 points off Daemen turnovers and held a 36-24 advantage in the paint. Buffalo also won the battle on the glass, including scoring nine second chance points off 11 offensive boards.
The Canisius Golden Griffins finished the 2022-23 season with a 9-21 overall record and 6-14 league mark in the second year under head coach Sahar Nusseibeh. Canisius was picked to finish ninth in the Mid-Atlantic Athletic Conference preseason poll. Sophomore forward Sisi Eleko was named to the Preseason All-MAAC Third Team after leading the Golden Griffins in total rebounds (162) and rebounds per game (5.7) while also scoring 8.6 points per game and shooting 44.2% from the floor last season. The Golden Griffins return eight letterwinners from last season while welcoming in four transfers and two freshmen. Nusseibeh is in her third year at the helm of the Golden Griffins. Under her guidance, the Giffs finished the season ranked second in the MAAC in free throw percentage and two players earned all-conference accolades.
Up next, Buffalo will hit the road to participate in their first game of the inaugural MAC-SBC Challenge as they travel to Norfolk, VA to take on the Old Dominion Monarchs on Saturday, November 11. First tip is set for 4pm.
