BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team put on an offensive clinic in a 92-75 rout of Niagara on Tuesday night at Alumni Arena. It was the second Big 4 victory for the Bulls in as many weeks.
Five Bulls scored in double figures led by redshirt senior guard Chellia Watson who scored a game-high 25 points to go with nine rebounds, six assists and three steals. Sophomore Hattie Ogden recorded a career-high 21 points to go with five rebounds and four steals and freshman Alexis Davis recorded her first career double-double with a career-best 15 points and 10 rebounds. Senior Rana Elhusseini added 12 points while freshman Kirsten Lewis-Williams recorded her third straight double figure scoring effort with 11 points.
Niagara hit a three on its opening possession, but the Bulls answered with aggressive play as they went on an 8-0 run, all from the charity stripe, to take an early lead. Niagara responded with an and-one bucket, but Lewis-Williams got to the rim with a baseline drive on UB's next possession and the Bulls led 10-8 at the first media timeout. Buffalo continued to attack as Ogden, Paula Lopez and Watson scored layups on three straight possessions to give UB a 20-12 lead and force a Niagara timeout at the 3:06 mark. Ogden continued to attack as Elhusseini hit her on a backdoor cut for a layup and then Lewis-Williams made a great hustle play, saving a ball back into play right to the hands of Davis who powered up for a bucket to give UB a 24-19 lead at the end of the first.
It was a back and forth start to the second quarter before Elhusseini drove and kicked to Ogden on the wing for a triple. Ogden then found Lewis-Williams for a layup and Watson sliced to the basket for a bucket off glass to cap a 7-0 run to give UB a 33-26 lead and force a Niagara timeout at the 5:24 mark. The teams traded layups before the Purple Eagles used a 6-0 run to take a two-point lead with 1:29 to go. Ogden answered with a spot up triple from the wing to put UB back on top, but Niagara cashed in at the free throw line in the final seconds of the half to take a 43-42 lead at the break.
Lewis-Williams gave the Bulls a spark to start the third quarter as she converted an and-one bucket on UB's first possession. Later, Watson hit Kiara Johnson on the block, and she powered up for a layup through contact and Watson got to the rack again for a tough layup to give Buffalo a 48-47 lead at the media timeout. Buffalo continued to attack as Ogden broke through a trap and hit Watson for a layup and then Ogden came up with a steal and scored in transition to put UB up 52-47 at the 4:28 mark. Davis got going in a big way as she came up with an offensive rebound and got the putback jumper to drop plus the foul and she continued to attack as she went 4-for-4 from the line on the next two trips down the floor to put UB up 59-51 with two minutes to go in the quarter before Watson and Ogden combined for a 6-0 run to give the Bulls a 67-55 lead at the end of the third.
Buffalo continued to click on offense as they used a 10-0 run, capped by an Elhusseini corner triple, to go up, 75-55, and force a Niagara timeout at the 8:06 mark. The Bulls would extend their lead to 24 on a layup by Davis at the 3:13 mark and they would cruise to victory from there.
The Bulls dominated inside, scoring 52 points in the paint while also owning the edge on the glass, including 17 second chance points off 12 offensive rebounds. UB committed just 13 turnovers against a Niagara squad that led the country in turnovers forced a year ago and flipped the script scoring 21 points off Purple Eagles' turnovers and adding 14 fast break points.
"Our team followed the game plan to absolute perfection tonight," said head coach Becky Burke. "We bounced back in a great way, and I was really proud of our team for that. This is a great sign for our young team moving forward that we can respond the way we did tonight. We obviously take a lot of pride in winning the Big 4 games, so we are glad to have accomplished that."
Up next, Buffalo continues its homestand on Friday, November 17 as they welcome the Stonehill Skyhawks to Alumni Arena for a 6pm contest.
