BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team put forth a phenomenal defensive effort as they defeated the Stonehill Skyhawks 60-39 at Alumni Arena on Friday night.
Redshirt senior guard Chellia Watson led all scorers with 19 points to go with seven rebounds and four assists. Sophomore Hattie Ogden scored in double figures for the second straight game with 12 points and five rebounds.
It was a sloppy start to the game as the Skyhawks led 5-4 at the first media timeout. The Bulls turned it up a notch on defense as they closed the quarter on a 10-2 run, capped by a pair of layups by Kiara Johnson and Ogden, to take a 10-5 lead at the end of the first.
After a sluggish start to the second quarter, Watson kicked it out to Ogden who drilled a triple and Kirsten Lewis-Williams used a beautiful spin move to finish off glass for a layup plus the foul to give UB a 16-7 lead at the media timeout. Later, Watson hit Ogden for a layup underneath before blowing by her defender and finishing off glass through contact for an and-one bucket to put the Bulls up by 10. Buffalo had a great final possession of the first half as they grabbed a defensive rebound and got out in transition as Lewis-Williams hit Ogden with a great pass and she beat the buzzer to give the Bulls a 23-13 lead at the half.
The offensive woes continued as neither team recorded a field goal for the first four minutes to start the third quarter before Lewis-Williams hit Alexis Davis on the block and she converted the and-one bucket before Watson got going with a pair of layups to give UB a 30-16 lead at the media timeout. Watson continued to distribute as she hit Ida Jonsson Ojala on the block for two before Rana Elhusseini dished out a beauty to Davis who powered up for a layup to give the Bulls a 35-22 lead at the end of the third.
The UB defense continued to shut down the Skyhawks, holding them without a field goal for the first four minutes of the fourth quarter and the offense took advantage, utilizing a 6-0 run to go up 41-22 at the 6:16 mark. Later, Watson took the ball strong to the rim for a layup and Lewis-Williams hit Elhusseini for a fastbreak bucket to put UB up 45-26 and force a Stonehill timeout at the 4:35 mark. Watson continued to attack as she added to her 10-point fourth quarter total with two more layups to seal the game for UB.
The Bulls turned defense into offense as they scored 22 points off Stonehill turnovers and recorded 15 fastbreak points, while holding a massive 46-18 advantage in the paint. UB recorded a season-high 52 rebounds, including 19 offensive rebounds which they turned into 15 second chance points.
Up next, Buffalo will host its third Big 4 opponent of the season as they welcome St. Bonaventure to Alumni Arena for an afternoon matinee on Wednesday, November 22 at 1pm.
