BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo men's basketball team (0-2, 0-0 MAC) fell to the South Alabama Jaguars (1-1, 0-0 Sun Belt) on Saturday afternoon in the MAC-Sun Belt Challenge. South Alabama took the contest, 70-56.
Heading into the game, both teams were looking to pick up their first win of the season. The Bulls won the opening tip, but didn't take the early lead, as the Jaguars eventually led wire to wire. Sy Chatman knocked down the Bulls' first basket from beyond the arc to cut into the Jaguars' 4-3 lead. South Alabama responded with a three of their own to lead 7-3.
Off a pair of Zaakir Williamson free throws, the Bulls were down one at the 12:13 mark, 14-13. That was the closest the Bulls got within striking distance as the Jaguars continued to score. Despite outshooting South Alabama from the floor, 47.6% to 44.8%, the Bulls trailed by four at the half, 33-29.
Out of the break, Chatman scored off a turnover to make it a 33-31 game. The Bulls offense would stumble with South Alabama leading 39-33. UB went nearly eight minutes while scoring just four points. With 8:52 left, the Bulls trailed 58-37. Despite the deficit, UB did not give in. Kanye Jones and Chatman drew a game-high eight fouls apiece.
Jones had a career day for the Bulls. He finished with 14 points, six rebounds, and five assists, all of which marked career highs.
Freshmen Bryson Wilson and Lloyd McVeigh saw their first collegiate action against the Jaguars. Wilson made his first career bucket on an and-one with two minutes left in regulation. Fellow freshman Ryan Sabol knocked down a pair of three-points, good for a career-high six points.
"We just we got a little stagnant, we started to just play one on one a little too much," stated Head Coach George Halcovage III. "You know, we kind of didn't make physical plays. They're a physical team and you need to meet physical with physicality, and I don't think we did a good job of that to start. We just got to get back to work on Monday. Tomorrow's the day off, get our bodies right, get a good rest, and then get back in on Monday and just focus on getting better Monday as a team and then Tuesday preparing."
The Bulls are back in action on Wednesday as they host Roberts Wesleyan at 7 p.m.
