Bulls Earn First Victory of the Season on Wednesday

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo men's basketball team (1-2, 0-0 MAC) defeated the Roberts Wesleyan Redhawks (1-2, 0-0 ECC) on Wednesday evening, 89-83. The win marked Head Coach George Halcovage III's first career win.
A total of five Bulls that scored in the double figures, led by Sy Chatman with 19 points. Chatman recorded his first double-double as a Bull with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Jonnivius Smith was perfect shooting the ball as he was 6-for-6 from the floor and 2-for-2 from the free throw line. He recorded his second double-double of the season with 14 points and 16 rebounds. Shawn Fulcher added 18 points, with Kanye Jones tying his career-high 14 points, and Isaiah Adams scoring 11.
The Redhawks led the Bulls by three five minutes into the contest and continued to keep it a close game until the halfway mark of the first half. Buffalo went on a 15-0 run after being tied at 27, the largest run of the game. Up 42-27, Roberts Wesleyan snapped the run with a put-back layup with five minutes left in the half.
With the Bulls leading by 14 with 30-seconds left, the Redhawks cut the lead down to nine before the half. Roberts Wesleyan buried a three and off the ensuing inbounds, they forced a turnover and made a buzzer beating layup. The Bulls led 51-42 at the half.
Off a Chatman dunk, the Bulls had their largest lead of the evening of 17, leading 65-48. The Redhawks then pressed the Bulls which got them back in the game. Overall, Roberts Wesleyan forced 28 Buffalo turnovers to their 12. Despite forcing 16 more turnovers, the Redhawks only outscored the Bulls 24-18 in points off turnovers.
Roberts Wesleyan cut the Bulls' lead down to three times in the final six minutes, but a Fulcher three with two to go, sealed the deal.
In the win, the Bulls went to the charity stripe 40 times while making 31 of their attempts, good for 77.5%. As a team, UB only shot nine three-pointers on the evening as they scored a season-high 42 points in the paint.
The Bulls made the most of their 44 shots from the floor as they made 27 baskets. The shooting percentage of 61.7% is eighth in program history. Overall, Roberts Wesleyan took 24 more shots than the Bulls and finished 31-for-68 (45.6%) from the floor.
Head Coach George Halcoavage III said that the team had some lapses where they let them [Roberts Wesleyan] back in the game. He later added that they're glad they go the win for the players and that they were "able to stay together to get it done."
The Bulls are back in action on Monday, Nov. 20 against the Hofstra Pride in Fort Myers, Fla. as they'll take part in the three-day Gulf Coast Showcase tournament.
