BUFFALO, NY – The Mid-American Conference announced its women's soccer postseason awards on Tuesday afternoon, with four Bulls earning All-MAC recognition. Sophomore midfielder Katie Krohn earned First Team honors while junior forward Arianna Zumpano and graduate student midfielder Leah Wengender were named to the Second Team and Maya Galko also earned All-Freshman Team honors.
"While we fell short on our team goals this fall, we did have some outstanding attacking play and it's nice to see them recognized," said head coach Shawn Burke. "To have your top three leaders in goals and points honored as all-conference members says a lot about their respect in our league. Adding Maya to the All-Freshman team speaks to her ability to transition well to the college game as she was a staple in our backline."
After earning a spot on the All-Freshman team as a rookie, Krohn earned first team honors for the first time in her UB career following a standout sophomore season in which she recorded a league-best 13 goings while adding four assists for 30 points. In addition to leading the conference in in total goals (13), she also led the league in goals per game (0.72), total points (30) and points per game (1.67) and ranked second in total shots (55) and shots per game (3.06). The Schoharie, NY native put together one of the best campaigns in program history as her 13 goals are tied for third all-time in a single-season in the program's Division I era and the 30 points are tied for fourth in the D1 era in a single season.
Zumpano earns Second Team honors for the first time in her Buffalo career. The Niagara Falls, Ontario native scored six total goals on the year but really took her play up a notch in conference play as five of her goals and all of her career-high three assists came in league action. She finished MAC play ranked tied for seventh in goals (5) and goals per game (0.45) while ranking eighth in points (13) and points per game (1.18). She has also moved into the top 20 in program history for career goals with 17.
Wengender was named to the All-MAC second team for the third time in her decorated UB career. The Rochester, NY native continued to bring speed and versatility to the Bulls' attacking midfield, tying a career-high with four goals and 13 points while adding a career-best five assists, all of which came in league play. She finished third on the team with 28 shots and 18 shots on goal.
Galko earned a spot on the All-Freshman Team after a solid rookie campaign. The Ottawa, Ontario native started in 17 of 18 games, logging 1,488 minutes which accounts for 92% of the team's minutes played this season. She recorded two assists in wins at Northern Illinois and over Toledo and she was a major factor on UB's set pieces with her left-footed services. Additionally, she helped lead the UB backline to eight shutouts on the year. This marks the ninth time in the last 10th seasons that the Bulls have placed a rookie on the All-Freshman team.
The Bulls finished the 2023 campaign with a 7-5-6 overall record and a 4-4-3 conference mark.
