BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team used a big fourth quarter to pull away for a 58-42 win over the Daemen Wildcats in an exhibition contest at Alumni Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Three Bulls scored in double figures, led by redshirt senior Chellia Watson and freshman Kirsten Lewis-Williams who recorded a game-high 13 points each. Also in double figures was graduate student forward Kiara Johnson who added 10 points.
The teams traded baskets to start the game before Watson blew by her defender for an easy layup and Johnson followed with an offensive rebound putback to give the Bulls a 9-6 lead at the first media timeout. After sloppy possessions for both teams, Watson found Alexis Davis on the block, and she powered up for two and the Bulls took a 11-8 lead at the end of the first.
Watson gave the Bulls a spark to start the second quarter as she got a layup plus the foul and then Rana Elhusseini found her with a beautiful pass for an easy layup to put UB up 16-10. After a 6-0 Daemen run, Hattie Ogden got a turnaround jumper to drop to put the Bulls back on top and Davis followed with a tough layup off glass as UB extended their lead. The Wildcats retook the lead on a layup at the 3:26 mark but the Bulls answered with an 8-3 run, capped by a triple from Paula Lopez and an offensive rebound putback by Davis at the buzzer, to take a 28-25 lead at the half.
Buffalo locked down defensively to start the third quarter as they did not allow a made field goal for four plus minutes and the offense took advantage, excelling in the high-low game, as Ogden found Johnson on the block twice to give UB a 33-29 lead at the media timeout. Damen then cut the lead to three, but the Bulls answered as Johnson and Lewis-Williams scored on back-to-back possessions to go up 40-33 and they would lead 40-35 at the end of the third.
Lewis Williams took over to start the fourth quarter she got an offensive rebound and converted the and-one bucket. Later, she knocked down a turnaround midrange jumper and then found Watson down the baseline for a layup to put UB up 47-35 at the 7:23 mark. Ogden then took on the role of the facilitator as she found Lewis-Williams and Lopez on two straight possessions and then Williams came up with a steal that led to a fastbreak and-one bucket on the other end, to cap a 6-0 run and put UB up 53-38, forcing a Daemen timeout at the 5:34 mark and that was more than enough as the Bulls cashed in at the charity stripe to secure the victory.
The Bulls turned defense into offense as they scored 20 points off Daemen turnovers and held a 36-24 advantage in the paint. Buffalo also won the battle on the glass, including scoring nine second chance points off 11 offensive boards.
Up next, Buffalo will open the regular season on Monday, November 6 as they welcome crosstown rival Canisius to Alumni Arena for the first game of a doubleheader starting at 5pm.
