Bulls Open Mid-American Conference Play at Kent State on Wednesday

BUFFALO, NY – After ending non-conference play on a four-game win streak, the University at Buffalo women's basketball team opens Mid-American Conference play at Kent State on Wednesday, January 4 at 7pm.
The game will be streamed on ESPN+ with Dave Wilson (play-by-play) and Matt Kiraly (color) announcing and can be heard on the radio on ESPN 1520AM or on the Varsity Network with Jack Kreuzer on the call.
This is the 44th overall meeting between Buffalo and Kent State with the Golden Flashes owning a 30-24 series advantage. The Bulls are 9-3 in their last 12 meetings with the Golden Flashes, most recently sweeping the season series a season ago.
UB overcame every challenge thrown their way as they closed out non-conference play with a 58-49 win at Big 4 rival St. Bonaventure on Thursday. Three Bulls scored in double figures led by fifth year guard Zakiyah Winfield who scored 21 points and grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds. Fellow fifth year backcourt mate Re'Shawna Stone scored 13 points and sophomore Emerita Mashaire recorded a career-high 10 points.
Winfield leads the team in scoring and rebounding at 15.1 points and 11.3 rebounds per game and has recorded four straight double-doubles, bringing her total to seven on the season. She ranks in the top 15 in the nation in double-doubles, rebounds per game and defensive rebounds per game. Jazmine Young has set new UB career-highs three times and is averaging 12.7 points and 1.9 assists per contest. Stone is also averaging in double figures at 11.3 points per game while adding 5.1 rebounds and 3.6 assists per contest. The Bulls lead the MAC in scoring defense (58.2) and rebounding defense (33.3) while ranking in the top half of the conference in field goal defense (39.1), 3FG defense (28.6), field goal percentage (42.0) and rebound margin (+1.6).
The Kent State Golden Flashes are 8-3 overall after defeating Coppin State 72-69 in overtime on Saturday. Kent State was picked to finish fourth in the MAC preseason poll. Senior guard Katie Shumate and fifth year forward Lindsey Thall lead the Golden Flashes in scoring at 12.1 ppg. Casey Santoro (9.7 ppg) and Corynne Hauser (8.2 ppg) are also main contributors. Thall is Kent State's all-time leader with 239 triples. She ranks 20th among active NCAA Division I players while ranking 11th in career blocks (182). Kent State posted a 4-1 record in the month of December and played stellar defense. The Flashes only allowed 52.0 points per game while limiting opponents to a 33.2 field goal percentage. They held three of five opponents to under the 50-point mark. The Golden Flashes get to the free throw line at a high rate as they are eighth in the nation in free throws per game, 14th in free throws made and 21st in free throw attempts since the start of the 2016-17 season.
Up next, Buffalo will return to Alumni Arena to take on the Central Michigan Chippewas on Saturday, January 7 at 2:30pm. It is the second game of a doubleheader, following the UB men who take on Northern Illinois at 12pm.
