1/27/2023 11:44:00 PM | Men's Basketball
KENT, Ohio – The University at Buffalo men's basketball team (10-11, 4-4 MAC) lost to the top-seeded Kent State Golden Flashes (17-4, 7-1 MAC) on Friday evening, 74-68. LaQuill Hardnett recorded his fifth double-double of the season with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Isaiah Adams led the team with 23 points, his fifth 20-point game of the season.
From the start, it went Kent State's way. The Bulls' offensive struggles started early as they went 0-for-7 with three turnovers in their first nine possessions. Buffalo scored their first basket off a Jonnivius Smith dunk with the and-one make at the 15:02 mark. Isaiah Adams gave the Bulls a 5-0 run after a pair of free throws and knocking down a three-pointer. Trailing 19-8 with 9:25 left in the opening half, Buffalo was just 2-for-16 from the floor with eight turnovers. The Bulls then made threes in three consecutive possessions to make it a 23-17 Kent State lead. At the half, Buffalo trailed 42-31 after shooting 27.3% from the floor (9-of-33). Four of their makes came from beyond the arc. They were perfect from the free throw line as they made all nine attempts.
Out of the break, Buffalo had a chance to creep back in after a technical foul on Kent State. Buffalo missed both technical free throws, then adding insult to injury, they went 1-for-2 on the free throws from the same sequence. The Bulls cut the Golden Flash lead to 47-40 after an Adams three-pointer, but could not keep the momentum. From the line, the Bulls failed to capitalize. Unlike the first half, they went 8-of-15 from the charity stripe in the second half. Buffalo made a run at the end of regulation, but the low shooting percentage was critical as their comeback fell short.
Overall, Buffalo was 22-for-66 (33.3%) from the floor, 7-for-29 (24.1%) from three-point range, and 17-of-24 (70.8%) from the charity stripe.
Armoni Foster recorded his fourth straight game with at least five assists and has done so in eight of the last nine.
The Bulls are back in action on Tuesday, Jan. 31 as they host the Akron Zips for this year's Blue Out game. The game will tip at 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
